
Computer science is one word that hides half a dozen different jobs. One person builds business applications, another designs games, a third hunts for holes in a company defences, a fourth turns data into pictures. At WSB-NLU in Nowy Sącz the whole engineering programme is taught in English, and the choice between those paths comes only later — once a student has the groundwork and knows what actually keeps them at the keyboard.
Engineering studies in computer science begin with the parts nobody can skip: programming fundamentals, how a computer is built, how networks move data, how an operating system decides what runs next. It is the stage at which computer science feels closer to mathematics than to the finished apps people use every day.
The choice of a specialisation comes later, and that order is deliberate. It is hard to pick between security and computer graphics before writing a single line of code.
From the third year students work on commercial projects for technology companies. That is the part of the programme the university builds its teaching around: briefs come from outside, deadlines are real, and the work is done the way a professional team would do it. Nowy Sącz is small by design. A campus of this size means lecturers know their students by name, and a student who gets stuck can find the person who wrote the assignment.
For people who like taking a problem apart and staying with it until it works, even when the third attempt fails like the first two. Patience with somebody else code helps, because commercial projects are written by teams. So does a tolerance for mathematics: algorithms and data structures do not get easier by being ignored.
It also suits someone who is not yet sure which corner of the field they want. Two years of shared groundwork is a long time to make up your mind.
Software houses and game studios, security teams, data and visualisation work, and the IT departments of companies that are not IT companies at all. The specialisation shapes the first job more than the last one — most people in this industry change direction at least once.
