Many employers in Tricity look for people who can discuss finance or marketing in English and switch to German, Swedish, Spanish or French a moment later. Business and Languages at the Sopot University of Applied Sciences (SANS) is a three-year bachelor’s programme that combines business courses taught in English with intensive study of a second foreign language and ends with a joint diploma of two universities — and at the end you can check whether this path suits you.

⇑Two fields in one degree

Business and Languages is a first-cycle, practical-profile programme leading to a bachelor’s degree (licencjat). It lasts three years (six semesters) and is offered in full-time and part-time mode, partly with online learning. All business courses are taught in English, and classes take place in Sopot and Gdańsk.

The programme is run jointly by two institutions: SANS, a business school, and Ateneum Academy in Gdańsk, a university focused on languages. Graduates receive one bachelor’s diploma issued by both universities. According to the university, this means students no longer have to choose between studying business and studying modern languages.

⇑Business in English

The business part of the curriculum covers both “hard” and “soft” skills. Students learn about:

  • finance and accounting,
  • international economic relations,
  • marketing,
  • effective business communication,
  • etiquette and negotiations in an international setting.

To make studying in English comfortable, the first semester includes 240 hours of business English, raising students’ level to C1. At the start, B2 is enough – confirmed by passing the English matura exam at the basic level.

⇑A second language from scratch

The “languages” part of the name is taken seriously. Within the specialisation, students choose a second foreign language: German, Swedish, Spanish or French. They study it intensively for four semesters, from the basic level up to B2, which adds up to 630 hours of classes.

Did you know? One of the lecturers, a former economic diplomat, points out that the programme can combine business communication in English and German – two languages that are key for the Polish economy – with the option of choosing a different second language.

⇑Practice before graduation

A guaranteed work placement takes place in the sixth semester, in Polish and international companies, including firms from the BPO/SSC sector. The university stresses that combining study and practice shortens the time needed to prepare for a job and gives graduates an edge on the labour market.

Many classes are taught by business practitioners. Their contacts help students build their own professional network during their studies, and they often act as mentors. SANS also works with outsourcing centres and companies recruiting finance and accounting specialists. Its strategic partners include the Association of Accountants in Poland (Gdańsk branch), ACCA and the Polish Chamber of Statutory Auditors (Gdańsk branch).

⇑An international classroom

The programme attracts both Polish and international students. Groups are small and students work together on projects, which helps them understand different cultures and prepares them for a multicultural workplace. The university presents this diversity as a source of new ideas and a solid base for an international career.

The programme has also received the “Studia z przyszłością” (Studies with a Future) certificate from the Foundation for the Development of Education and Higher Education, awarded for innovative content, teaching methods and programme quality.

⇑Career prospects

Graduates can work in Poland or abroad. After gaining experience, they can take on managerial and leadership roles. Typical career paths include:

  • trade, marketing or PR specialist,
  • business consultant,
  • analyst,
  • running their own business.

The BPO sector, Polish companies expanding abroad and foreign companies looking for staff with an unusual mix of business and language skills are named as natural employers. Current admission rules and fees are best checked on the university’s website, as they may change between intakes.

⇑Summary

Business and Languages at SANS is a bachelor’s programme for people who do not want to choose between business and languages. It combines finance, marketing and international communication taught in English with four semesters of German, Swedish, Spanish or French, a guaranteed work placement and a joint diploma of two universities. It is a practical start for anyone planning a career in an international company.
