⇑Chemistry in English, in Białystok

Applied Chemistry is a second-cycle (master’s) programme run by the Faculty of Chemistry at the University of Białystok. It is a full-time programme taught in English and open to candidates from Poland and from abroad. Classes are taught by the Faculty’s research and teaching staff, with lecturers from other faculties of the University also involved.

The programme is designed to give graduates knowledge, skills and competences in chemistry, firmly based on the exact and natural sciences. The Faculty stresses that its aim is to prepare people for work not only in Poland or Europe, but anywhere in the world, including outside Europe.

⇑Two specialisations

Students develop their expertise along one of two paths:

  • Chemical Analysis,
  • Chemistry of Materials.

Within the specialisations, students can choose from numerous elective subjects, so the programme can be shaped to individual interests. The full study plan is published by the Faculty on its website.

⇑A strong focus on the laboratory

The defining feature of Applied Chemistry is its practical side. The programme includes many laboratory classes, which the Faculty links directly to the practical skills that employers value. Classes take place on the University of Białystok campus.

Besides theoretical knowledge in the exact and natural sciences, especially the chemical sciences, the programme pays attention to:

  • practical skills needed in future professional work,
  • the ethical context of the chemist’s profession,
  • professional English used in chemistry.

⇑Who can apply

The programme is aimed at graduates of first-cycle, second-cycle or uniform master’s studies in the exact and natural sciences (chemical sciences), in medical and health sciences (pharmaceutical, medical and health sciences) and in engineering and technical sciences such as biomedical engineering or chemical engineering. This makes it a possible next step not only for chemists, but also for people with a background in pharmacy or engineering who want to deepen their chemistry. Current admission rules and fees are worth checking on the university’s admissions website, as they vary between intakes.

⇑Graduate profile and careers

Graduates are expected to follow national and global developments in chemistry by reading professional literature and to use English at B2+ level. They are also prepared to continue their education at a doctoral school or in postgraduate studies.

The Faculty lists a wide range of places where graduates can work:

  • scientific, research and development, diagnostic and process laboratories,
  • biotechnology, pharmaceutical, cosmetic and environmental protection institutions,
  • the chemical industry,
  • public administration, non-governmental and research organisations that use chemistry.

The Faculty of Chemistry also offers chemistry at first and second cycle, environmental quality and safety, and forensic chemistry.

⇑Summary

Applied Chemistry at the University of Białystok is a master’s programme in English for people who want to work hands-on in chemistry. With specialisations in Chemical Analysis and Chemistry of Materials, many laboratory classes and a focus on professional English, it prepares graduates for laboratories, industry and administration in Poland and internationally.
