Why study it:

Physics at Jan Długosz University in Częstochowa (UJD) is a three-year (6-semester) Bachelor's programme (first-cycle) with a general academic profile, taught in English and leading to the title of Bachelor of Physics. It is for people who want to understand and accurately describe physical phenomena – you choose your specialisation, radiological protection or nanotechnology, already during admission.

Programme: physics with measurement practice

The programme builds general knowledge of physics on solid foundations in mathematics and natural sciences. You learn to use modern measuring equipment and technical diagnostic systems and to gather, process and pass on information in physics and technology. The first two semesters cover general education in the exact sciences, and specialisation subjects begin in the 3rd semester.

Specialisation: radiological protection or nanotechnology

Nuclear Safety and Radiological Protection prepares you to supervise compliance with radiological protection requirements wherever radioactive sources and devices generating ionising radiation are used. Classes emphasise practice and give you the theoretical and practical knowledge needed to work as a radiological protection inspector, also in future nuclear facilities.

Nanotechnology covers solid-state physics and nanoscale materials with their structural, electronic, optical and magnetic properties, the physical foundations of nanotechnology, nanostructure technology and computational nanotechnology. Besides lectures and seminars, you take part in laboratory classes on nanostructure fabrication and structural research.

Languages: B2 and the language of physics

You graduate with a foreign language at B2 level, with special emphasis on the specialised and technical language used in physics.

Qualifications: towards radiological protection inspector

In the Nuclear Safety and Radiological Protection specialisation, completing the studies exempts you from additional training. After prior approval by the President of the State Atomic Energy Agency, you can take the state examination for Radiological Protection Inspector. The practical focus of classes lets you gain the required practical experience in radiation exposure.

After graduation: nuclear supervision, laboratories and research

You can continue with second-cycle studies in Physics or, depending on your specialisation, work in:

  • agencies responsible for nuclear supervision and the metallurgical and mining industries,
  • research units using ionising radiation and institutions dealing with dose control and calibration of dosimetric devices,
  • specialised industrial and research laboratories, in Poland and abroad,
  • companies implementing innovative technologies, science and technology parks and advanced technology centres,
  • research institutions and industries that require knowledge of the exact sciences.

As of the 2026/27 admissions, based on the programme description at rekrutacja.ujd.edu.pl.

Fizyka test

Test: check whether Physics is the right major for you!

1. Do you enjoy understanding the fundamental laws that govern how the universe behaves?

2. Are you comfortable with abstract mathematical reasoning and manipulating equations?

3. Do you like designing, running, and interpreting experiments to test hypotheses?

4. Are you persistent in solving complex, multi-step problems even when they take time?

5. Do you enjoy using computers or simulations to model physical systems?

6. Are you curious about phenomena beyond everyday experience (quantum, relativity, cosmology)?

7. Do you enjoy explaining technical concepts clearly to others or working in study groups?

8. Are you willing to engage deeply with derivations, proofs, and rigorous justification rather than just memorizing facts?

9. Do you enjoy connecting different areas of science and seeing how they fit into a coherent picture?

10. Are you excited by the idea of contributing to discovery or innovation, even if the payoff is long-term?

⇑Definitions and quotes

Physics
Physics (from Ancient Greek: φυσική (ἐπιστήμη), translit. physikḗ (epistḗmē), lit. 'knowledge of nature', from φύσις phýsis "nature") is the natural science that studies matter and its motion and behavior through space and time and that studies the related entities of energy and force. Physics is one of the most fundamental scientific disciplines, and its main goal is to understand how the universe behaves.

"If I were forced to sum up in one sentence what the Copenhagen interpretation says to me, it would be 'Shut up and calculate!'"
N. David Mermin, What's Wrong with this Pillow?, Physics Today, April 1989, page 9, doi:10.1063/1.2810963
Physics
There have indeed been civilizations upon your planet that understood as well as you, and without your kind of technology, the workings of the planets, the positioning of the stars -- people who even foresaw "later" global changes. They used a mental physics. There were men before you who brought back data quite as "scientific" and pertinent. There were those who understood the "origin" of your solar system far better than you. Some of these civilizations did not need spaceships. Instead, highly trained men combining the abilities of dream-art scientists and mental physicists cooperated at journeys not only through time but through space.

Physics
As soon as we venture on the paths of the physicist, we learn to weigh and measure, to deal with time and space and mass and their related concepts, and to find more and more our knowledge expressed and our needs satisfied through the concept of number, as in the dreams of Plato and Pythagoras.
