Why study it:

Nanophysics and Advanced Optics at Jan Długosz University in Częstochowa (UJD) is a two-year Master's programme (second-cycle) with a general academic profile, taught in English and leading to the title of Master of Science. It is for those who want the advanced knowledge and practical skills needed in modern research and industrial laboratories.

Programme: the nanoscale and light

Nanophysics covers the study and application of materials and processes at the nanoscale, which matter in nanotechnology, electronics, biophysics and medicine. Advanced optics covers both theoretical and practical aspects of imaging technologies and information transmission. The programme builds a deep understanding of advanced theoretical concepts in both fields and teaches the development of new materials and optical technologies, including photonics and quantum optics.

Labs: nanomaterial manipulation and analysis

You carry out experimental research in laboratories equipped with tools for manipulating and analysing nanomaterials.

After graduation: R&D careers

The programme prepares you for research and development careers: working in interdisciplinary R&D teams and communicating and managing projects in scientific and industrial settings.

Graduates can find work in R&D laboratories, technology centres, the optical and electronics industries, the medical sector and research institutions specialising in nanotechnology, as well as at universities and organisations focused on developing new technologies.

As of the 2026/27 admissions, based on the programme description at rekrutacja.ujd.edu.pl.

10 questions · two minutes

1. You need to align a laser beam through several lenses and mirrors on an optical table. How do you feel about that?

2. How do you feel about quantum optics topics such as single photons, entanglement and light–matter interaction?

3. Your measured spectrum shows an unexpected peak. What do you do?

4. Which research project would you choose?

5. How do you feel about numerical simulations – for example, modelling how light scatters on nanoparticles?

6. The programme is taught in English, and you’ll work in labs and seminars with physicists from many countries. How do you see that?

7. How do you feel about the maths behind electromagnetism and quantum mechanics?

8. Which application of nanophotonics interests you most?

9. Which future path sounds most like you?

10. What motivates you most to pursue a Master’s degree in Nanophysics and Advanced Optics?

⇑Definitions and quotes

Optics
Optics is the branch of physics which involves the behaviour and properties of light, including its interactions with matter and the construction of instruments that use or detect it. Optics usually describes the behaviour of visible, ultraviolet, and infrared light. Because light is an electromagnetic wave, other forms of electromagnetic radiation such as X-rays, microwaves, and radio waves exhibit similar properties.
Optics
Why has not man a microscopic eye?
For this plain reason, Man is not a Fly.
Say, what the use, were finer optics giv'n,
T' inspect a mite, not comprehend the heav'n?
Alexander Pope, An Essay on Man (1733-34), Epistle I, line 193.
Optics
(Ptolemy) left in his Optics, the earliest surviving table of angles of refraction from air to water. ...This table, quoted and requoted until modern times, has been admired... A closer glance at it, however, suggests that there was less experimentation involved in it than originally was thought, for the values of the angles of refraction form an arithmetic progression of second order... As in other portions of Greek Science, confidence in mathematics was here greater than that in the evidence of the senses, although the value corresponding to 60° agrees remarkably well with experience.
Carl B. Boyer, The Rainbow: From Myth to Mathematics (1959)
Optics
Music is the arithmetic of sounds as optics is the geometry of light.
Claude Debussy, as quoted in Greatness : Who Makes History and Why by Dean Keith Simonton, p. 110
