⇑Why study Sport (Master's) at AWFiS?

Why study it:

Sport at master’s level is a two-year, full-time programme with a practical profile, taught in English at the Gdańsk University of Physical Education and Sport (AWFiS). It is aimed at people who want to keep combining a sports career with deeper knowledge of how sport functions, and who see themselves on a coaching staff or in the management of sports clubs.

Programme: the next step after a bachelor’s

The master’s programme builds on the experience of people who already know sport from the inside. Theoretical and practical classes are taught by researchers and by specialists in the areas relevant to the programme, as well as by coaches of Olympic and national teams and by accomplished athletes. The emphasis moves from learning to train towards planning and leading the whole training process and taking responsibility within an organisation – so that after two years you are ready to work as a member of a coaching or specialist staff or to manage sports clubs and organisations.

Specialisation: two ways to build your profile

At master’s level you choose between depth and breadth. You take one coaching specialisation in an Olympic sport, or – instead of it – two instructor specialisations, or an instructor specialisation combined with another one, for example in sport analytics, wellness, sport management or the organisation of sport events.

Labs: laboratories and sports venues

On the campus in the Oliwa district of Gdańsk you work with:

  • a laboratory of sport and exercise physiology
  • a biomechanics laboratory
  • a laboratory of health and performance psychology
  • facilities for qualitative research
  • 5 outdoor sports fields, 13 gyms, 2 sports halls and a swimming pool

Qualifications: master’s title and a coach’s diploma

What you graduate with

  • Professional titlemagister (Master of Arts) in sport
  • Diplomacoach or sports instructor in the discipline of your specialisation
  • Studysecond-cycle, full-time, 2 years, practical profile

After graduation: on the staff and in management

Graduates are prepared to programme, organise and implement the sports training process as members of a coaching or specialist staff – the team of people who work together around athletes and teams, rather than as a lone instructor.

The second direction is management: the programme prepares you to run sports clubs and sports organisations, which makes the master’s degree a good fit for former athletes and coaches who want to take on responsibility for a club as a whole.

⇑Definitions and quotes

Sport
Sport (British English) or sports (American English) includes all forms of competitive physical activity or games which, through casual or organised participation, aim to use, maintain or improve physical ability and skills while providing enjoyment to participants, and in some cases, entertainment for spectators. Hundreds of sports exist, from those between single contestants, through to those with hundreds of simultaneous participants, either in teams or competing as individuals. In certain sports such as racing, many contestants may compete, simultaneously or consecutively, with one winner; in others, the contest (a match) is between two sides, each attempting to exceed the other. Some sports allow a tie game; others provide tie-breaking methods to ensure one winner and one loser. A number of contests may be arranged in a tournament producing a champion. Many sports leagues make an annual champion by arranging games in a regular sports season, followed in some cases by playoffs.
