Why study it:

Sport is a three-year, full-time bachelor’s programme with a practical profile, taught in English at the Gdańsk University of Physical Education and Sport (AWFiS). It is meant for people who want to combine their own sports career with a broader understanding of sport – from the training process to the way the sport market works.

Programme: training practice backed by science

At the heart of the programme is the theory and practice of training in a sport you select. You learn current training trends and gain the practical knowledge and skills needed to plan and run training. Classes are led by coaches with many years of experience at different levels of competition, as well as by researchers who work on questions that matter to sport and publish in peer-reviewed international journals.

Alongside training, the curriculum covers the basics of entrepreneurship, management and marketing in sport. The aim is that you leave AWFiS able to find your way around the sport market and understand its main functions and dependencies.

Specialisation: a coaching path plus at least one more

The programme is shaped by the specialisations you choose during your studies:

  • one coaching specialisation in an Olympic sport offered by AWFiS – this is compulsory for every student
  • at least one additional specialisation – an instructor specialisation in another sport, or another option such as fitness, personal training or sport analytics
  • the combination is meant to broaden your competences and make you more competitive on the labour market

⇑Definitions and quotes

Sport
Sport (British English) or sports (American English) includes all forms of competitive physical activity or games which, through casual or organised participation, aim to use, maintain or improve physical ability and skills while providing enjoyment to participants, and in some cases, entertainment for spectators. Hundreds of sports exist, from those between single contestants, through to those with hundreds of simultaneous participants, either in teams or competing as individuals. In certain sports such as racing, many contestants may compete, simultaneously or consecutively, with one winner; in others, the contest (a match) is between two sides, each attempting to exceed the other. Some sports allow a tie game; others provide tie-breaking methods to ensure one winner and one loser. A number of contests may be arranged in a tournament producing a champion. Many sports leagues make an annual champion by arranging games in a regular sports season, followed in some cases by playoffs.
