⇑Why study International Relations at Lazarski University in Warsaw?

Dlaczego warto studiować w Akademii Łazarskiego w Warszawie
Why study it:

International Relations is a three-year, full-time bachelor's programme taught in English at Lazarski University in Warsaw and run as a double degree with the University of Westminster. It suits you if you follow world politics and diplomacy and want to build a career in an international setting.

Programme: British standards, discussion in class

The programme combines academic training with British educational standards. Classes are interactive and built around discussion, and you work through case studies, policy simulations and projects led by experts. Assessment includes debates, presentations, policy briefs and group work, so you practise the skills the profession expects.

The core covers the theory and analysis of international relations, foreign policy and international security, and international governance and diplomacy. You also study the institutions and long-term trends that shaped the Western world, together with economics, political philosophy, European integration, international law and international political economy. Each year you choose electives, for example conflict resolution strategies, international economic relations, global humanitarian issues or regional politics in Asia, Africa or Latin America, and in the final year you write a bachelor's thesis.

Placements: internships and student clubs

Beyond lectures you can:

  • complete internships in embassies, government agencies or international NGOs, with the university's support
  • join the debate club, the negotiation club and the student foreign affairs club to build leadership skills
  • learn in small groups, in direct contact with your lecturers and peers

Languages: English, plus French or German

The whole programme is taught in English, so you build your analytical and communication skills in the language of international work, and you can add French or German as a language elective.

Exchanges: two diplomas and international exchanges

You graduate with diplomas from both Lazarski and the University of Westminster, and the University of Westminster supports your progress through pre- and post-moderation of your academic work. The programme offers international exchanges and joint research projects, so your studies in Warsaw can reach well beyond a single campus. Two internationally recognised degrees give you a clear advantage when you apply for roles abroad.

After graduation: where the degree leads

The programme prepares you to work in:

  • international organisations
  • embassies and diplomatic services
  • global industries

⇑Definitions and quotes

International
International mostly means something (a company, language, or organization) involving more than a single country. The term international as a word means involvement of, interaction between or encompassing more than one nation, or generally beyond national boundaries. For example, international law, which is applied by more than one country and usually everywhere on Earth, and international language which is a language spoken by residents of more than one country.
International Relations
International Relations (IR) or International Affairs (IA) - commonly also referred to as International Studies (IS) or Global Studies (GS) - is the study of interconnectedness of politics, economics and law on a global level. Depending on the academic institution, it is either a field of political science, an interdisciplinary academic field similar to global studies, or an entirely independent academic discipline in which students take a variety of internationally focused courses in social science and humanities disciplines. In all cases, the field studies relationships between political entities (polities) such as sovereign states, inter-governmental organizations (IGOs), international non-governmental organizations (INGOs), other non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and multinational corporations (MNCs), and the wider world-systems produced by this interaction. International relations is an academic and a public policy field, and so can be positive and normative, because it analyses and formulates the foreign policy of a given state.
International Relations
The most dangerous states in the international system are continental powers with large armies.
John Mearsheimer, The Tragedy of Great Power Politics (2001).
International Relations
The bipolar world is over, but it not going to be replaced by a unipolar world empire that the United States controls alone. The world is already economically multipolar, and there will be a diffusion of power as the information revolution progresses, interdependence increases, and transnational actors become more important. The new world will not be neat, and you will have to live with that.
Joseph Samuel Nye, Jr.,Understanding International Conflicts - An Introduction to Theory and History (Sixth Edition).
International Relations
Offensive realism predicts that the United States will send its army across the Atlantic when there is a potential hegemon in Europe that the local great powers cannot contain by themselves.
John Mearsheimer, The Tragedy of Great Power Politics (2001).
