Why study it:

Jagiellonian University in Kraków (UJ) runs Mathematics and Computer Science Advanced Track at the Institute of Mathematics of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science as a three-year (six-semester), full-time bachelor's programme taught in English, with a general academic profile. It is designed for exceptionally gifted students who want to do mathematics and computer science at the highest level and are thinking about a career in research.

Programme: research from the first semester

The programme combines a solid theoretical foundation in mathematics and computer science with intensive development of research, analytical and project skills. From the first semester you work under individual academic supervision and are gradually drawn into real research, carried out among other things in the form of tutorials.

Your supervisors are active researchers who support you as you tackle your own research problems, and you develop your projects in close cooperation with mentors who specialise in the relevant fields. A wide choice of courses lets you shape your own path and prepares you to take on ambitious, complex scientific problems.

Labs: computer labs on the 600th Anniversary Campus

A modern faculty building: the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science is based on the 600th Anniversary Campus of the Jagiellonian University, in a building with well-equipped lecture and tutorial rooms, computer labs with specialist software and a spacious library.

Languages: English from day one

All classes are taught in English, so you need to have a command of English that allows you to study in it already at the moment of registration. Working in English from the very beginning reflects the main aim of the programme: preparing you for research in an international academic environment.

After graduation: straight to a PhD or advanced projects

Graduates have advanced knowledge of mathematics and computer science and well-developed skills in logical and analytical thinking, modelling phenomena and solving problems algorithmically. Typical next steps include:

  • doctoral studies, which the programme prepares you to start directly
  • advanced research and development projects
  • international-level research on fundamental questions underlying future technologies
  • a master's programme or postgraduate studies, e.g. at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science

Did you know? The faculty's student research groups include the Mathematics Students' Society (Koło Matematyków Studentów UJ) and the Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Research Group, and students organise their own conferences and workshops, including ones that help newcomers find their feet.

10 questions · two minutes

1. Your teacher states a theorem in class without proving it. How do you react?

2. Have you taken part in maths or computing olympiads or competitions, or do you solve algorithmic problems online?

3. Your program works correctly but takes ages to run on large inputs. What do you do?

4. Lectures, problem sets and class discussions will all be in English, in a group of ambitious students from different countries. How does that sound?

5. An advanced track means a fast pace and lots of independent work. How do you feel about that?

6. You hit a problem you can’t solve straight away. What next?

7. What fascinates you most about computer science?

8. A classmate asks you to explain a problem they don’t understand. How do you go about it?

9. Where do you see yourself after graduating?

10. What motivates you most to study Mathematics and Computer Science Advanced Track?

⇑Definitions and quotes

Computer
A computer is a device that can be instructed to carry out sequences of arithmetic or logical operations automatically via computer programming. Modern computers have the ability to follow generalized sets of operations, called programs. These programs enable computers to perform an extremely wide range of tasks.
Computer Science
Computer science is the study of the theory, experimentation, and engineering that form the basis for the design and use of computers. It is the scientific and practical approach to computation and its applications and the systematic study of the feasibility, structure, expression, and mechanization of the methodical procedures (or algorithms) that underlie the acquisition, representation, processing, storage, communication of, and access to, information. An alternate, more succinct definition of computer science is the study of automating algorithmic processes that scale. A computer scientist specializes in the theory of computation and the design of computational systems. See glossary of computer science.
Mathematics
Mathematics (from Greek μάθημα máthēma, "knowledge, study, learning") is the study of such topics as quantity, structure, space, and change. It has no generally accepted definition.
Science
Science (from Latin scientia, meaning "knowledge") is a systematic enterprise that builds and organizes knowledge in the form of testable explanations and predictions about the universe.
Mathematics
Think of it: of the infinity of real numbers, those that are most important to mathematics—0, 1, √2, e and π—are located within less than four units on the number line. A remarkable coincidence? A mere detail in the Creator's grand design? I let the reader decide.
Eli Maor, e: The Story of a Number (1994)
Science
We’ve arranged a global civilization in which most critical elements profoundly depend on science and technology. We have also arranged things so that almost no one understands science and technology. This is a prescription for disaster. We might get away with it for a while, but sooner or later this combustible mixture of ignorance and power is going to blow up in our faces.
Sir Ernest Rutherford from The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark (1996), 26.
Mathematics
Mathematical development in England was at a low ebb in the early decades of the nineteenth century, with Cambridge stagnating in the shadow of Newton, who had produced his mathematics nearly a century and a half earlier. This dead hand of tradition, which stifled much initiative and originality, was in sharp contrast to the situation in France.
