Why study it:

Jagiellonian University in Kraków (UJ) offers International Relations and Public Diplomacy (IR-PUB) as a two-year, full-time Master's programme taught in English at the Centre for International Studies and Development of the Faculty of International and Political Studies. It is designed for students who want to combine the analysis of international relations with political, economic and cultural public diplomacy.

Programme: international relations meets public diplomacy

The programme covers, among other things:

  • multi-level analysis of international relations and of states' external action
  • public diplomacy – political, economic and cultural – at global, regional and state level and in non-governmental organisations
  • international affairs and security issues
  • international economic relations and public international law
  • negotiation, mediation, analytical and leadership skills

Languages: English and the language of diplomacy

The whole programme is taught in English and is intended for students who already have a sufficient command of the language when they apply. During the studies you develop the professional and specialist language used in diplomacy. You also learn to work in international teams that bring together different cultures and religions.

Exchanges: two semesters in Kraków, two in Siena

Double degree with the University of Siena: you spend two semesters at UJ in Kraków and two at the University of Siena in Italy, which brings complementary expertise in public and cultural diplomacy. The programme was set up with funding from the Katamaran programme of the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA).

After graduation: diplomacy, international affairs, crisis settings

The learning outcomes respond to the needs of today's world: working in international teams, especially in crisis situations, with knowledge of international political and economic relations and public diplomacy. Graduates are prepared for careers in public diplomacy, international affairs, security and international economic relations. Further study options at UJ include the Doctoral School in the Social Sciences and postgraduate programmes at the Faculty.

⇑Definitions and quotes

Diplomacy
Diplomacy is the art and practice of conducting negotiations between representatives of states. It usually refers to international diplomacy, the conduct of international relations through the intercession of professional diplomats with regard to a full range of topical issues. International treaties are usually negotiated by diplomats prior to endorsement by national politicians. David Stevenson reports that by 1900 the term "diplomats" also covered diplomatic services, consular services and foreign ministry officials.
International
International mostly means something (a company, language, or organization) involving more than a single country. The term international as a word means involvement of, interaction between or encompassing more than one nation, or generally beyond national boundaries. For example, international law, which is applied by more than one country and usually everywhere on Earth, and international language which is a language spoken by residents of more than one country.
International Relations
International Relations (IR) or International Affairs (IA) - commonly also referred to as International Studies (IS) or Global Studies (GS) - is the study of interconnectedness of politics, economics and law on a global level. Depending on the academic institution, it is either a field of political science, an interdisciplinary academic field similar to global studies, or an entirely independent academic discipline in which students take a variety of internationally focused courses in social science and humanities disciplines. In all cases, the field studies relationships between political entities (polities) such as sovereign states, inter-governmental organizations (IGOs), international non-governmental organizations (INGOs), other non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and multinational corporations (MNCs), and the wider world-systems produced by this interaction. International relations is an academic and a public policy field, and so can be positive and normative, because it analyses and formulates the foreign policy of a given state.
Public
In public relations and communication science, publics are groups of individual people, and the public (a.k.a. the general public) is the totality of such groupings. This is a different concept to the sociological concept of the Öffentlichkeit or public sphere. The concept of a public has also been defined in political science, psychology, marketing, and advertising. In public relations and communication science, it is one of the more ambiguous concepts in the field. Although it has definitions in the theory of the field that have been formulated from the early 20th century onwards, it has suffered in more recent years from being blurred, as a result of conflation of the idea of a public with the notions of audience, market segment, community, constituency, and stakeholder.
International Relations
Offensive realism predicts that the United States will send its army across the Atlantic when there is a potential hegemon in Europe that the local great powers cannot contain by themselves.
John Mearsheimer, The Tragedy of Great Power Politics (2001).
International Relations
A potential hegemon, as emphasized throughout this book, must be wealthier than any of its regional rivals and must possess the most powerful army in the area.
John Mearsheimer, The Tragedy of Great Power Politics (2001).
Diplomacy
It was this idea (Be nice!) that fueled liberals' rage at Reagan when he vanquished the Soviet Union with his macho "cowboy diplomacy" that was going to get us all blown up. As the Times editorial page hysterically described Reagan's first year in office: "Mr. Reagan looked at the world through gun sights." Yes, he did! And now the Evil Empire is no more.
Ann Coulter, "Are videotaped beheadings covered by Geneva?" (20 September 2006)
