⇑Why study International Relations and Area Studies at UJ?

Why study it:

Jagiellonian University in Kraków (UJ) runs International Relations and Area Studies at the Faculty of International and Political Studies as a three-year (six-semester), full-time bachelor's programme taught entirely in English, with a general academic profile and political science and public administration as its leading discipline. It is meant for students who already use English well and want to work on international issues – from local and regional matters to global politics, security and diplomacy.

Programme: international issues in a multicultural group

The programme gives you systematic, interdisciplinary knowledge of international affairs and the skills to apply it in politics, academia and the economy. Classes take place in a multicultural environment, so alongside the subject matter you build intercultural competences needed to deal with national and international challenges. You learn to analyse changes in the social and economic environment at the local, regional and international level, and students take part in international educational and academic initiatives. Each course in the study plan has its own syllabus, with compulsory and elective subjects spread over six semesters.

Languages: English plus another language

Everything happens in English: you need a working command of the language from the start, and the programme aims to produce graduates who are fluent in English and also use another foreign language.

Exchanges: exchanges and student research

Beyond regular classes, you can join:

  • Erasmus+, CEEPUS and Utrecht Network exchanges
  • bilateral exchanges and Una Europa, the European university alliance
  • the MOST programme for study stays at other Polish universities
  • the Association of International and Area Studies of the Jagiellonian University (AIAS) and other faculty research clubs

After graduation: public, private and non-governmental sectors

Graduates can work in the public and private sectors – in social, cultural, economic and political institutions, both governmental and non-governmental, national and international. These include organisations dealing with international security, diplomacy and socio-cultural relations at the local, regional, transnational and global level.

You can continue at master's level, for example in International Relations, or choose postgraduate studies at the faculty.

Did you know? The faculty is based in a modern eight-storey building on Reymonta Street, with four large lecture halls, a student zone and its own library with a reading room, close to the Jagiellonian Library, Jordan Park and the Błonia meadows.

⇑Definitions and quotes

Area
Area is the quantity that expresses the extent of a two-dimensional figure or shape, or planar lamina, in the plane. Surface area is its analog on the two-dimensional surface of a three-dimensional object. Area can be understood as the amount of material with a given thickness that would be necessary to fashion a model of the shape, or the amount of paint necessary to cover the surface with a single coat. It is the two-dimensional analog of the length of a curve (a one-dimensional concept) or the volume of a solid (a three-dimensional concept).
International
International mostly means something (a company, language, or organization) involving more than a single country. The term international as a word means involvement of, interaction between or encompassing more than one nation, or generally beyond national boundaries. For example, international law, which is applied by more than one country and usually everywhere on Earth, and international language which is a language spoken by residents of more than one country.
International Relations
International Relations (IR) or International Affairs (IA) - commonly also referred to as International Studies (IS) or Global Studies (GS) - is the study of interconnectedness of politics, economics and law on a global level. Depending on the academic institution, it is either a field of political science, an interdisciplinary academic field similar to global studies, or an entirely independent academic discipline in which students take a variety of internationally focused courses in social science and humanities disciplines. In all cases, the field studies relationships between political entities (polities) such as sovereign states, inter-governmental organizations (IGOs), international non-governmental organizations (INGOs), other non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and multinational corporations (MNCs), and the wider world-systems produced by this interaction. International relations is an academic and a public policy field, and so can be positive and normative, because it analyses and formulates the foreign policy of a given state.
International Relations
States have two kinds of power: latent power and military power.
John Mearsheimer, The Tragedy of Great Power Politics (2001).
International Relations
In brief, for the United States, Eurasian geostrategy involves the purposeful management of geostrategically dynamic states and the careful handling of geopolitically catalytic states, in keeping with the twin interests of America in the short-term: preservation of its unique global power and in the long-run transformation of it into increasingly institutionalized global cooperation. To put it in a terminology that hearkens back to the more brutal age of ancient empires, the three grand imperatives of imperial geostrategy are to prevent collusion and maintain security dependence among the vassals, to keep tributaries pliant and protected, and to keep the barbarians from coming together.
Zbigniew Brzezinski,The Grand Chessboard (1997).
International Relations
Political realism believes that politics, like society in general, is governed by objective laws that have their roots in human nature. In order to improve society it is first necessary to understand the laws by which society lives. The operation of these laws being impervious to our preferences, men will challenge them only at the risk of failure. V`Realism, believing as it does in the objectivity of the laws of politics, must also believe in the possibility of developing a rational theory that reflects, however imperfectly and one-sidedly, these objective laws. It believes also, then, in the possibility of distinguishing in politics between truth and opinion — between what is true objectively and rationally, supported by evidence and illuminated by reason, and what is only a subjective judgment, divorced from the facts as they are and informed by prejudice and wishful thinking.
Hans Morgenthau, Politics Among Nations (1948).
