Why study it:

Marine Biotechnology at the University of Gdańsk (UG) is a two-year (four-semester), full-time second-cycle programme taught in English by the Faculty of Oceanography and Geography together with the Intercollegiate Faculty of Biotechnology. It is designed for graduates of earth, environmental, biological, chemical, pharmaceutical or biomedical studies who want to turn marine resources into food, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

Programme: from marine biodiversity to marine pharmacology

The curriculum builds up over four semesters:

  • first semester: biodiversity of marine organisms, aquaculture, biotechnology of microorganisms, molecular and cellular biology, marine natural products
  • second semester: reproductive biotechnology, marine pharmacology, marine-derived cosmetics and nutraceuticals, alternative methods of organism protection
  • later semesters: marine omics, bioinformatics and molecular modelling, and structural analysis of marine natural products
  • seminars and an MSc laboratory chosen according to your own interests
  • sustainable farming of aquatic organisms and production of high-value health-promoting products

Labs: laboratory classes and research cruises

Laboratory classes are a key element of the programme – they let you acquire practical skills in advanced research techniques and methods. The programme also includes research cruises and an introduction to biotechnology in industry. Teaching draws on the staff's experience in aquaculture, molecular diagnostics and the use of marine natural products, and some courses are delivered by experts from other Polish and foreign institutions in the biotechnology sector.

Placements: internships in the study programme

Internships are part of the study programme, alongside an introduction to how biotechnology works in industry.

Languages: a programme taught entirely in English

After graduation: blue biotechnology and aquaculture

Graduates can work in biotechnology companies that process marine natural resources into cosmetics, cosmeceuticals, nutraceuticals, functional food, biomaterials and pharmaceuticals, as well as in aquaculture and sustainable food production.

Other options include institutions concerned with the marine environment and the conservation of its resources, research laboratories, and regional, national and foreign bodies responsible for developing the blue economy.

Did you know? The programme was created in response to the European Commission's policy of promoting the blue economy sector.
