⇑Why study Veterinary Medicine (long-cycle Master's) at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences – SGGW?

Dlaczego warto studiować w Szkole Głównej Gospodarstwa Wiejskiego w Warszawie
Why study it:

Veterinary Medicine at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences – SGGW is a long-cycle Master's programme taught in English. It lasts five and a half years (eleven semesters) and leads to the title of veterinary surgeon, so it suits you if you want to diagnose and treat animals and protect public health.

Programme: from basic sciences to clinical practice

You start with basic subjects such as animal anatomy, histology and embryology, cell biology, chemistry, biochemistry and genetics. Then come preclinical subjects, including animal physiology, veterinary microbiology, immunology, pharmacology and parasitology. Later you move on to clinical courses: pathophysiology, pathomorphology, general surgery and anaesthesiology, diagnostic imaging of small and large animals, as well as diseases of farm animals, horses, dogs and cats. You also study toxicology, zoonoses and veterinary jurisprudence, and take Polish language classes alongside the main programme. The programme prepares you to recognise and interpret pathological changes, implement appropriate treatment and apply preventive programmes. Electives let you add topics such as One Health in veterinary practice, veterinary gerontology, primary cell cultures in veterinary research and advanced imaging techniques.

Labs: clinic and laboratories

You can use the knowledge in practice in the university's teaching and research facilities, including:

  • the Small Animal Clinic
  • the Molecular Analysis Laboratory
  • the Virology Laboratory
  • the Cytometry Unit

Placements: summer practice

Summer practice is part of the programme and includes husbandry practice, clinical practice and practice in the Veterinary Inspection, in a slaughterhouse.

After graduation: clinics, inspection, laboratories and research

Graduates find employment in veterinary clinics, the Veterinary Inspection and sanitary-epidemiological stations.

They also work in inspection, research and diagnostic laboratories, animal breeding stations, research institutions, zoos and pharmaceutical plants, as well as in the supervision of food production.

Did you know? Among the electives are Principles of dog handling and Principles of horse handling.

Medicine
Medicine is the science and practice of the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Medicine encompasses a variety of health care practices evolved to maintain and restore health by the prevention and treatment of illness. Contemporary medicine applies biomedical sciences, biomedical research, genetics, and medical technology to diagnose, treat, and prevent injury and disease, typically through pharmaceuticals or surgery, but also through therapies as diverse as psychotherapy, external splints and traction, medical devices, biologics, and ionizing radiation, amongst others.
Veterinary Medicine

The scope of veterinary medicine is wide, covering all animal species, both domesticated and wild, with a wide range of conditions which can affect different species.
Medicine
I do remember an apothecary,—
And hereabouts he dwells,—whom late I noted
In tatter'd weeds, with overwhelming brows,
Culling of simples; meagre were his looks,
Sharp misery had worn him to the bones:
And in his needy shop a tortoise hung,
An alligator stuff'd, and other skins
Of ill-shaped fishes; and about his shelves
A beggarly account of empty boxes,
Green earthen pots, bladders and musty seeds,
Remnants of packthread and old cakes of roses,
Were thinly scatter'd to make up a show.
William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet (1597), Act V, scene 1, line 37.
Medicine
Who shall decide when doctors disagree,
And soundest casuists doubt, like you and me?
Alexander Pope, Moral Essays (1731-35), Epistle III.
Medicine
He (Tiberius) was wont to mock at the arts of physicians, and at those who, after thirty years of age, needed counsel as to what was good or bad for their bodies.
Tacitus, Annals, Book VI, Chapter XLVI. Same told by Suetonius, Life of Tiberius, Chapter LXVIII.
