⇑Why study Sustainable Horticulture (Master's) at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences – SGGW?

Dlaczego warto studiować w Szkole Głównej Gospodarstwa Wiejskiego w Warszawie
Why study it:

Sustainable Horticulture is a Master's programme at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences – SGGW, taught in English. It lasts four semesters (two years) and ends with a vocational degree of master of science in engineering, so it suits you if you have a background in biology, environmental protection, forestry, agriculture or horticulture and want to learn how to grow plants in an environmentally responsible way.

Programme: from sustainable production to product quality

The programme moves step by step. First you get to know the many uses of horticultural research, from cultivating and caring for plants to the impact of production on the environment, and you study sustainable pomology, medicinal and aromatic plants, vegetables, ornamental plants and arboriculture. Then you turn to environmentally sustainable production, including breeding and propagation of fruit and ornamental plants and seed production, as well as pest control and plant pathology. Later you focus on the quality of horticultural products. The last stage is devoted to your diploma thesis.

Along the way you choose electives such as pruning and training of trees and shrubs, wild-growing medicinal, food and cosmetic plants, indoor flower arrangements, phytoremediation, essential oils, integrated pest management or the microworld of fungi.

Languages: a language of your choice

Besides the English-taught classes, you also take a foreign language course in English, German, Polish or Spanish.

Qualifications: path to professional entitlements

After meeting further statutory requirements, you may apply for Polish professional entitlements such as:

  • agricultural entitlements,
  • inspector competence in food quality systems, including GlobalGAP, BioSuisse, integrated production and organic farming,
  • powers of an inspector of the Commercial Inspection for Agricultural and Food Quality,
  • entitlement to use plant protection products,
  • entitlements in plant production, issuing plant passports and seed certification.

After graduation: own business, consultancy or research

Graduates receive a broad professional background in horticulture in the context of sustainability and changing environmental conditions. You can run your own business, for example a nursery for ornamental trees and shrubs, a berry plantation, an orchard, ornamental or vegetable production, a green-services company or a garden-design firm. Because the programme also covers horticulture in urban areas, you can work in design offices and urban greening companies, as well as in professional associations, research institutions, raw material and cosmetic laboratories and education.

Based on the programme pages at sggw.edu.pl and the SGGW syllabus.
