⇑Why choose the Modern Engineering in Water Management specialisation at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences – SGGW?

Dlaczego warto studiować w Szkole Głównej Gospodarstwa Wiejskiego w Warszawie
Why study it:

Modern Engineering in Water Management is a specialisation within the Environmental Engineering programme at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences – SGGW, taught in English during a 1.5-year Master's degree. It suits you if you want to focus on rivers, urban water, catchments and the tools used to model them.

Programme: a water-focused block in every semester

Across three semesters you follow a block of specialisation subjects, supported by diploma seminars dedicated to the specialisation and by an open list of electives. At the start you can choose UAV/UAS environmental applications, remote sensing, or water structures in the environment. Later come numerical modelling of hydrosystems, urban hydrology and urban hydrological modelling. In the last semester the list includes hydromorphological river quality assessment, ecosystem services, and climate change and its consequences.

Specialisation: electives for data, catchments and groundwater

The open list also lets you build your own profile, for example with:

  • Water resources management and modelling,
  • Agricultural catchment modelling,
  • Groundwater and soil protection,
  • Engineering surveying and geoinformatic applications,
  • Programming and scripting.

After graduation: investments, administration and research

Graduates can work as designers, contractors and operators of investments in sanitary structures, networks and installations, waste management and environmental reclamation, or in administration, research institutes and their own business.

Based on the programme pages at sggw.edu.pl and the SGGW syllabus.

10 questions · two minutes

1. On a placement or in your first job, you learn that local streets flood after every downpour. What interests you?

2. Do you have experience with hydraulic or hydrological modelling, GIS or analysing monitoring data?

3. Lectures, projects and reading will be in English, and you’ll study in an international environment with engineers from different countries facing very different water challenges – from drought to flooding. How does that sound?

4. You’re designing a wastewater treatment plant for a growing city. What do you take into account?

5. What do you think about using sensors, remote monitoring and data analysis in water supply networks?

6. Droughts are becoming more frequent in the region. How do you approach the issue?

7. Your project meets opposition from local residents and environmental groups. What do you do?

8. How do you like to work?

9. Where do you see yourself after graduating?

10. What motivates you most to pursue a Master’s degree in Modern Engineering in Water Management?

⇑Definitions and quotes

Engineering
Engineering is the creative application of science, mathematical methods, and empirical evidence to the innovation, design, construction, operation and maintenance of structures, machines, materials, devices, systems, processes, and organizations. The discipline of engineering encompasses a broad range of more specialized fields of engineering, each with a more specific emphasis on particular areas of applied mathematics, applied science, and types of application. See glossary of engineering.
Management
Management (or managing) is the administration of an organization, whether it is a business, a not-for-profit organization, or government body. Management includes the activities of setting the strategy of an organization and coordinating the efforts of its employees (or of volunteers) to accomplish its objectives through the application of available resources, such as financial, natural, technological, and human resources. The term "management" may also refer to those people who manage an organization.
Water
Water is a transparent, tasteless, odorless, and nearly colorless chemical substance that is the main constituent of Earth's streams, lakes, and oceans, and the fluids of most living organisms. Its chemical formula is H2O, meaning that each of its molecules contains one oxygen and two hydrogen atoms that are connected by covalent bonds. Strictly speaking, water refers to the liquid state of a substance that prevails at standard ambient temperature and pressure; but it often refers also to its solid state (ice) or its gaseous state (steam or water vapor). It also occurs in nature as snow, glaciers, ice packs and icebergs, clouds, fog, dew, aquifers, and atmospheric humidity.
Water
And so never ending,
But always descending.
Robert Southey, The Cataract of Lodore
Management
Management as an activity has always existed to make people’s desires through organized effort. Management facilitates the efforts of people in organized groups and arises when people seek to cooperate to achieve goals.
Daniel A. Wren and Arthur G. Bedeian. The evolution of management thought, 1972, p. 11-12
Engineering
Engineering is the conscious application of science to the problem of economic production.
Halbert Powers Gillette (1910). cited in: T.J. Hoover & J.C. Lounsbury Fish. The Engineering Profession. Stanford University Press, 1941. p. 463
