⇑Why study Forest Information Technology (Master's) at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences – SGGW?

Dlaczego warto studiować w Szkole Głównej Gospodarstwa Wiejskiego w Warszawie
Why study it:

Forest Information Technology is a Master's programme taught entirely in English at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences – SGGW and run together with the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development. It is meant for graduates of forestry and related fields who want to bring digital and data tools into forest and environmental work.

Programme: digital tools for forestry

Digital, smart and innovative technologies are now part of forestry and natural resource management, and the programme builds on environmental information technologies and Green IT. Among the courses you meet:

  • principles of forest data structures, GIS and remote sensing
  • applied programming in forestry and applied GIS programming
  • environmental spatial data analysis, data analysis and modelling
  • forest photogrammetry and digital processing of remotely sensed data
  • forest inventory and modelling
  • close-to-nature silviculture, forest engineering and utilisation, forest policy and economics

Languages: a programme fully in English

After graduation: experts in digital forestry

Graduates are experts in applying modern information technologies in the forest and environmental sector. They can solve problems in silvicultural practice as well as in spatial information and data management.

The two diplomas open the way to European and international job markets focused on digital technologies, sustainable management of natural resources, empirical ecological research based on digital data, forest and environmental management or ecological consultancy. A Master's certificate is also an accepted basis for continuing as a PhD student.

10 questions · two minutes

1. During your Bachelor’s or a placement, you work with maps and spatial data. How do you approach them?

2. How do you feel about fieldwork – in the forest, measuring trees or carrying out an inventory?

3. You’re given satellite images and a point cloud from a laser scan of a forest area. What do you do?

4. At Master’s level, you’ll read research papers and software documentation, write reports and present projects in English, in a team with people from many countries. How do you feel about that?

5. How do you feel about coding and automating analyses?

6. A forest manager wants to assess the state of the stands after a severe windstorm. How would you go about it?

7. Field measurements are scattered across a dozen spreadsheets, each in a different format. What do you do?

8. On a project, you’re working with foresters who don’t know IT and IT specialists who don’t know forests. How do you get on?

9. How do you picture your work after graduating?

10. What motivates you most to pursue a Master’s degree in Forest Information Technology?

⇑Definitions and quotes

Forest
A forest is a large area dominated by trees. Hundreds of more precise definitions of forest are used throughout the world, incorporating factors such as tree density, tree height, land use, legal standing and ecological function. According to the widely used Food and Agriculture Organization definition, forests covered 4 billion hectares (9.9×109 acres) (15 million square miles) or approximately 30 percent of the world's land area in 2006.
Information
Information is any entity or form that provides the answer to a question of some kind or resolves uncertainty. It is thus related to data and knowledge, as data represents values attributed to parameters, and knowledge signifies understanding of real things or abstract concepts. As it regards data, the information's existence is not necessarily coupled to an observer (it exists beyond an event horizon, for example), while in the case of knowledge, the information requires a cognitive observer.
Information Technology
Information technology (IT) is the use of computers to store, retrieve, transmit, and manipulate data, or information, often in the context of a business or other enterprise. IT is considered to be a subset of information and communications technology (ICT).
Technology
Technology ("science of craft", from Greek τέχνη, techne, "art, skill, cunning of hand"; and -λογία, -logia) is first robustly defined by Jacob Bigelow in 1829 as: "...principles, processes, and nomenclatures of the more conspicuous arts, particularly those which involve applications of science, and which may be considered useful, by promoting the benefit of society, together with the emolument [compensation ] of those who pursue them" .
Technology
The marriage of reason and nightmare which has dominated the 20th century has given birth to an ever more ambiguous world. Across the communications landscape move the specters of sinister technologies and the dreams that money can buy. Thermonuclear weapons systems and soft drink commercials coexist in an overlit realm ruled by advertising and pseudoevents, science and pornography. Over our lives preside the great twin leitmotifs of the 20th century—sex and paranoia.
J. G. Ballard, Crash (1973, 1995), catalogue notes. In J. G. Ballard, The Kindness of Women (2007), 221.
Information Technology
The role of information management is to mediate between information technology and information institutions to facilitate their effective planning, organization, control, and operation.
William White eds. (1976) LJ, Library Journal. Volume 101, Nr 1-8. p. 155.
Technology
The path towards sustainable energy sources will be long and sometimes difficult. But America cannot resist this transition, we must lead it. We cannot cede to other nations the technology that will power new jobs and new industries, we must claim its promise. That’s how we will maintain our economic vitality and our national treasure—our forests and waterways, our crop lands and snow-capped peaks. That is how we will preserve our planet, commanded to our care by God. That’s what will lend meaning to the creed our fathers once declared.
Barack Obama In Second Inaugural Address (21 Jan 2013) at the United States Capitol.
