Food Science – Technology and Nutrition is a three-year, full-time first-cycle programme taught in English at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences – SGGW, ending with a bachelor's degree. It is meant for you if you want to combine food technology with human nutrition and learn a good part of it in the laboratory.
You start with biology, general and organic chemistry, mathematics, food raw materials, information technology and sustainable food systems. Then come food chemistry, biochemistry and enzymology, an introduction to food processing and to human nutrition, and the basics of food engineering, human anatomy and physiology. Later you move on to food microbiology, general food technology, instrumental methods of food analysis, and the technology of plant-origin and animal-origin food. The programme has many contact hours with a large share of practical laboratory work, experiments in groups or individually, lectures, tutorials and project-based teaching.
In the later years you study sensory analysis, consumer behaviour, new food products development, catering technology, food production hygiene, the basics of dietetics and the nutrition of selected population groups. You finish with a seminar and a project in either food technology or human nutrition, and you can choose electives such as functional food, herbs, food and health, or food safety and quality management in production or in gastronomy.
