⇑Why study Food Science – Technology and Nutrition (Master's) at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences – SGGW?

Dlaczego warto studiować w Szkole Głównej Gospodarstwa Wiejskiego w Warszawie
Why study it:

Food Science – Technology and Nutrition is a two-year, full-time Master's programme taught in English at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences – SGGW. It suits you if you want to work in sustainable food production, modern processing technologies and human nutrition, whether in industry, research or consulting.

Programme: advanced food engineering, biotechnology and nutrition

In the first year you study advanced techniques in food engineering, biotechnology for food innovations, contemporary processing technologies and food analysis, and the global challenges of food production and distribution. You also learn about the application of chemistry and biochemistry in food studies, human nutrition, experiment planning, food quality management systems in international trade, and nutrition and consumer policy. The second year brings challenges management in the food industry, nutrition education and an introduction to writing your thesis, together with a seminar and a research project laboratory in either food technology or human nutrition. Electives range from probiotic food and the microbiome to circular design for food, and you can earn extra micro-credentials by taking them.

Placements: practice and research projects

Practical experience is built into the programme:

  • gastronomy and nutrition practice
  • technological and laboratory practice
  • research projects and internships in leading companies and international institutions

Exchanges: Erasmus+ and UNIgreen

Study abroad: Erasmus+ and the UNIgreen alliance connect you with partners in sustainable food systems and green biotechnology, and you can complete part of your studies at partner universities.

After graduation: careers across the food chain

Graduates leave with an interdisciplinary education that combines advanced scientific, technical, biotechnological and economic knowledge with the basic sciences, so they are ready for positions requiring high professional qualifications.

Typical employers include food processing companies, firms managing quality and safety in the food chain, companies supplying technological solutions to the food industry, diet planning and catering firms, consulting companies, commercial laboratories, food distribution and logistics, and research and development institutes.

⇑Definitions and quotes

Food
Food is any substance consumed to provide nutritional support for an organism. It is usually of plant or animal origin, and contains essential nutrients, such as carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, or minerals. The substance is ingested by an organism and assimilated by the organism's cells to provide energy, maintain life, or stimulate growth.
Food Science
Food science is the applied science devoted to the study of food. The Institute of Food Technologists defines food science as "the discipline in which the engineering, biological, and physical sciences are used to study the nature of foods, the causes of deterioration, the principles underlying food processing, and the improvement of foods for the consuming public". The textbook Food Science defines food science in simpler terms as "the application of basic sciences and engineering to study the physical, chemical, and biochemical nature of foods and the principles of food processing".
Nutrition
Nutrition is the science that interprets the interaction of nutrients and other substances in food in relation to maintenance, growth, reproduction, health and disease of an organism. It includes food intake, absorption, assimilation, biosynthesis, catabolism, and excretion.
Science
Science (from Latin scientia, meaning "knowledge") is a systematic enterprise that builds and organizes knowledge in the form of testable explanations and predictions about the universe.
Technology
Technology ("science of craft", from Greek τέχνη, techne, "art, skill, cunning of hand"; and -λογία, -logia) is first robustly defined by Jacob Bigelow in 1829 as: "...principles, processes, and nomenclatures of the more conspicuous arts, particularly those which involve applications of science, and which may be considered useful, by promoting the benefit of society, together with the emolument [compensation ] of those who pursue them" .
Science
I was particularly interested in that, in working on Jurassic Park that aspect of what are the negative parts. Because in talking with the people who were doing this kind of research what I was hearing was that the most responsible of them were deciding not to proceed down certain lines of inquiry which is really a new phase in science. Traditionally in science what the scientists themselves have said is: "I might as well do it, because if I don't, someone else will. It is going to happen inevitably." I think there's recognition now, that it's no so inevitable and it's quite conceivable that if I don't do this research neither will anyone else. It's simply too dangerous.
Michael Crichton, interview Lost World section of Beyond Jurassic Park DVD.
Food
Approximately 3.1 million children die from hunger each year.
World Hunger Education Service, "World Child Hunger Facts," Hunger Notes, July 1, 2015
Food
The poor on the borderline of starvation live purposeful lives. To be engaged in a desperate struggle for food and shelter is to be wholly free from a sense of futility.
