Computer Science at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences – SGGW is a first-cycle engineering programme taught in English. It lasts seven semesters (3.5 years), ends with the title of engineer and suits anyone who wants a broad, hands-on grounding in computing and is ready to study in English.
You start with the essentials: introduction to programming, algorithmic reasoning, mathematical analysis, discrete mathematics, linear algebra, the basics of physics and electronics, with laboratory classes in physics and electronics. Later you move on to object-oriented programming, algorithms and data structures, software engineering, computer architecture, database technologies, operating systems and numerical methods. The programme also covers graphs and networks, probability and statistics, data analysis methods and building internet services. In the final stage you study computer networks, programming paradigms and artificial intelligence, take part in a team project and a diploma seminar, and prepare your engineering thesis.
In the third year you choose a specialisation that runs until the end of your studies. Information systems engineering focuses on software architecture, component programming, internet programming, data processing systems and data warehouses, and later on business intelligence and e-commerce systems. Information protection and computer system security are part of this path as well.
Computer systems engineering stays closer to hardware and networks: theory of algorithms, fundamentals of teleinformatics, embedded systems, distributed systems, network services, hardware security, mobile systems and wireless communications, and computer systems security.
Internships are built into the programme. Alongside the engineering subjects you complete a professional internship, which shows you how computing works outside the classroom.
A foreign language runs through the second year: you choose English, German, Russian or Spanish, and the language track ends with a confirmation of your language proficiency. Alongside it you take physical education and a humanities subject of your choice, such as psychology, philosophy or sociology. In the last stage you also choose between subjects such as labour law and intercultural communication.
Graduates can find employment in all branches of the economy that use computers, in particular in:
