⇑Why study Nursing at MUB?

Why study it:

Nursing at the Medical University of Bialystok (MUB) is a three-year, full-time first-cycle programme taught in English and leading to a Bachelor’s degree in nursing. It is meant for students who want to learn to care for patients independently, with plenty of practice in simulated clinical settings before working with real patients.

Programme: from basic sciences to specialist care

Courses in the programme are grouped into six areas, from science foundations to work with patients:

  • basic sciences,
  • social sciences and humanities,
  • foundations of nursing care, including planning and delivering care with the nursing process,
  • specialist care,
  • practical classes,
  • professional placements.

Labs: the Nursing Simulation Centre

Practical sessions take place in the Nursing Simulation Centre. Its 12 rooms reflect the real working conditions of nurses: four technical skills labs and two nursing and midwifery skills labs for basic and advanced procedures, plus high-fidelity rooms for adult care (internal medicine, surgical-internal medicine and surgery), a paediatric care room, an operating theatre and an intensive care unit.

You start on training manikins and anatomical models, then move on to patient simulators – from newborns and children to elderly patients – and learn to assess a patient’s condition, make decisions and work as part of a team. Two debriefing rooms, one of which doubles as a virtual reality lab, are used to discuss each simulation, and most rooms are equipped for OSCE examinations.

Languages: English-taught programme and a pre-course with Polish

All classes are held in English. Before the first year, every student completes a mandatory three-week pre-course that revises biology (16 hours), chemistry (32 hours) and physics (30 hours). It also includes 18 hours of Polish for basic everyday fluency and helps you improve your English medical and science terminology.

⇑Definitions and quotes

Nursing
Nursing is a profession within the health care sector focused on the care of individuals, families, and communities so they may attain, maintain, or recover optimal health and quality of life. Nurses may be differentiated from other health care providers by their approach to patient care, training, and scope of practice. Nurses practice in many specialties with differing levels of prescription authority. Many nurses provide care within the ordering scope of physicians, and this traditional role has shaped the public image of nurses as care providers. However, nurse practitioners are permitted by most jurisdictions to practice independently in a variety of settings. In the postwar period, nurse education has undergone a process of diversification towards advanced and specialized credentials, and many of the traditional regulations and provider roles are changing.
Nursing
Bound by paperwork, short on hands, sleep, and energy... nurses are rarely short on caring.
Sharon Hudacek, A Daybook for Nurses (2004)
Nursing
I use the word nursing for want of a better. It has been limited to signify little more than the administration of medicines and the application of poultices. It ought to signify the proper use of fresh air, light, warmth, cleanliness, quiet, and the proper selection and administration of diet—all at the least expense of vital power to the patient.
Florence Nightingale, Notes on Nursing (1860)
Nursing
In a world where there is so much to be done, I felt strongly impressed that there must be something for me to do.
Dorothea Dix, quoted in Lydia Maria Child, Letters from New York, Vol. 2 (1845), "Letter 31" (31 December 1844), p. 284
