1. At work you’re handed a sales spreadsheet riddled with gaps and duplicates. What do you do?

Clean the data first and document what I’ve changed, then start the analysis. Delete the incomplete rows and carry on. Analyse it as it is.

2. Your manager asks for ‘a customer analysis’ with no further detail. How do you start?

Ask what decision she’s trying to make, then choose the data and methods to fit. Put together a set of general charts. Wait for her to spell out what she wants.

3. You find a strong correlation between two variables. How do you interpret it?

With caution – before suggesting cause and effect, I check for a hidden third factor and whether the link makes sense. Assume one drives the other, since that’s what the chart shows. I don’t overthink it – I just report the result.

4. At Master’s level you’ll analyse data, write reports and present findings in English, with classmates from many countries. How do you feel about that?

Very positive – analytics is international, and being able to explain findings in English to different audiences is a big asset. I’ll cope, though presenting results in English takes some effort. I’d rather avoid English.

5. You need to present your findings to senior managers who don’t know much about statistics. How do you do it?

Lead with the key takeaway, show it in a simple chart and spell out what it means for the business. Show every table and model so nothing gets left out. Send them the data file and let them see for themselves.

6. The marketing team wants to know which version of a web page sells better. What do you suggest?

An A/B test with users split at random, a proper sample size and a success metric agreed in advance. Showing both versions to a few people and asking which they prefer. Going with whichever looks nicer.

7. How do you approach learning new analytics tools and programming languages?

Keenly – I keep learning and pick the tool to fit the problem, not the other way round. I stick with spreadsheets as long as they do the job. I don’t like learning new tools.

8. Your analysis doesn’t back up what your boss was hoping for. What do you do?

Double-check my method, then present the result honestly, along with its limitations. Tone down the conclusions to avoid a clash. Pick the data so the result fits.

9. You have access to customers’ personal data. How do you handle it?

Use only what’s necessary, anonymise it wherever possible and follow privacy rules. I’m careful, but I don’t give it much thought. If I have access, I can use all of it.

10. What motivates you most to pursue a Master’s degree in Data Analytics?

The chance to sharpen my analytical skills and shape decisions in businesses and organisations with solid data. A better job and a higher salary. I’m not sure it’s for me
