⇑Why study English Philology at the University of Bialystok?

Studiuj na UwB – Uniwersytet w Białymstoku
Why study it:

English Philology is a three-year, six-semester bachelor's programme at the Faculty of Philology of the University of Bialystok, with a general academic profile led by linguistics. It suits anyone who wants to master English and understand how the language, its literature and the cultures behind it work.

Programme: language practice and the study of language

Practical English runs through the first three years of the programme. You work on reading for detail and for general understanding, listening, extended speaking and building arguments for and against an idea, including speaking without preparation. Phonetics is a strong thread: you learn how sounds are produced, use phonetic transcription, and practise connected speech, stress, rhythm and intonation.

Alongside this, you study linguistics through introductory general linguistics, the descriptive grammar of English, the history of the English language and a first introduction to translation.

Specialisation: elective modules

Elective groups of subjects let you deepen your own interests in three areas:

  • linguistics – research methods, recent trends in linguistics, phonetics and phonology, the history of English II and a second part of the introduction to translation
  • literary and cultural studies – English literature II, American literature II and the culture of English-speaking countries I and II
  • language learning and teaching – EFL teaching and current trends, learning and teaching techniques, learning styles and strategies, and intercultural education

Placements: internship

The programme includes an internship in which you broaden and apply what you have learned, find out how an organisation works, and practise cooperating with a group and liaising with customers. The internship is unpaid and is based on a signed agreement. Voluntary work, a full-time job or training can count towards it, as long as they lead to the required learning outcomes.

Languages: a second modern language

A second modern language is part of the plan – you can choose French, Russian, Spanish or German and learn it in dedicated classes next to your English studies.

After graduation: what you can do after graduating

By the end of the programme you are prepared to:

  • analyse and interpret literary texts and other works of culture and place them in their historical and cultural context
  • take part in debates in English and present and discuss different opinions
  • use English, spoken and written, at advanced level
  • plan and organise your own work and teamwork, and take up lifelong learning independently

Based on the programme pages and curriculum documents of UwB.

⇑Definitions and quotes

Philology
Philology is the study of language in oral and written historical sources; it is a combination of literary criticism, history, and linguistics. Philology is more commonly defined as the study of literary texts as well as oral and written records, the establishment of their authenticity and their original form, and the determination of their meaning. A person who pursues this kind of study is known as a philologist.
Philology
To live classically and to realize antiquity practically within oneself is the summit and goal of philology.
Friedrich Schlegel, Philosophical Fragments, P. Firchow, trans. (1991) § 147
Philology
Now the philosophy of life, in its highest range at least, is a divine science of experience. This experience, however, is throughout internal and spiritual. It is therefore easily conceivable that it can enter readily and easily into all other experimental sciences, and into those especially which more immediately relate to man, as, for instance, most of the branches of natural history, and still more into philology, with which at present we are most immediately concerned. And this it does, in order to borrow such illustrations and comparisons as may tend to elucidate or further to develop its own subject-matter, or else to furnish applications to individual cases in other departments of life. However, in thus proceeding, philosophy must take heed lest it overpass its own proper limits or forget its true end and aim. It must not go too deeply into particulars, or lose itself among the specialities of the other sciences. On the contrary, it ought carefully to confine itself to those points which more immediately concern man, and especially the inner man, and, adhering to the meaning and spirit of the whole, seek to elucidate and throw out this pre-eminently.
Friedrich Schlegel, The philosophy of life, and philosophy of language, in a course of lectures
Philology
Philologists, who chase
A panting syllable through time and space,
Start it at home, and hunt it in the dark,
To Gaul, to Greece, and into Noah's ark.
William Cowper, Retirement (1782)
