Why study it:

Computer Science at Akademia WSB-NLU in Nowy Sącz is a seven-semester (three-and-a-half-year) engineering programme, studied full-time on campus from Monday to Friday. At WSB-NLU you choose one of five specialisations, so it suits anyone who wants an engineering degree in IT with a clear direction – applications, games, security, graphics or artificial intelligence.

Programme: a common engineering core

Most specialisations share a technical foundation: discrete mathematics, algorithms and data structures, programming in C++ and the fundamentals of software engineering. Several tracks add Java, project management and the fundamentals of electronics and digital technology. On top of that core, each specialisation has its own set of subjects.

Specialisation: five tracks for the IT market

  • Business Application Developer – desktop, web and mobile applications built to the standards of professional programming teams
  • Game Developer – designing and programming your own game, including AI in games and 3D modelling
  • Cybersecurity Analyst – cryptography, reverse engineering, security audits and data protection
  • Computer Graphics – 2D and 3D graphics, animation and visual communication
  • AI Engineer – machine learning, language processing and generative models

Placements: commercial projects and partner companies

Practice in brief

  • Projectsreal commercial projects for technology companies from the third year
  • Internshipsin partner companies developing business software and computer games for the European market
  • Teachingprogrammers, game developers and IT specialists with experience of international projects

Qualifications: accreditation by the Polish Accreditation Committee

The field of study is accredited by the Polish Accreditation Committee, which confirms that it meets national and European educational standards.

After graduation: software, games, security, graphics, AI

Depending on the specialisation, graduates work as software engineers, backend and web developers or testers, in game development and animation, as IT security and audit specialists, as graphic designers in media and games, or as machine learning engineers and data scientists. Project-based learning means you graduate used to working in a project team.

Did you know? The Game Developer specialisation has a patron – the independent game studio iFun4all S.A., whose employees teach specialist subjects.

⇑Definitions and quotes

Computer
A computer is a device that can be instructed to carry out sequences of arithmetic or logical operations automatically via computer programming. Modern computers have the ability to follow generalized sets of operations, called programs. These programs enable computers to perform an extremely wide range of tasks.
Computer Science
Computer science is the study of the theory, experimentation, and engineering that form the basis for the design and use of computers. It is the scientific and practical approach to computation and its applications and the systematic study of the feasibility, structure, expression, and mechanization of the methodical procedures (or algorithms) that underlie the acquisition, representation, processing, storage, communication of, and access to, information. An alternate, more succinct definition of computer science is the study of automating algorithmic processes that scale. A computer scientist specializes in the theory of computation and the design of computational systems. See glossary of computer science.
Science
Science (from Latin scientia, meaning "knowledge") is a systematic enterprise that builds and organizes knowledge in the form of testable explanations and predictions about the universe.
Computer Science
Any problem in computer science can be solved with another level of indirection.
David Wheeler (Attributed in: Butler Lampson. Principles for Computer System Design. Turing Award Lecture. February 17, 1993.) Wheeler is said to have added the appendage "Except for the problem of too many layers of indirection."
Science
We’ve arranged a global civilization in which most critical elements profoundly depend on science and technology. We have also arranged things so that almost no one understands science and technology. This is a prescription for disaster. We might get away with it for a while, but sooner or later this combustible mixture of ignorance and power is going to blow up in our faces.
Sir Ernest Rutherford from The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark (1996), 26.
Computer Science
I can’t be as confident about computer science as I can about biology. Biology easily has 500 years of exciting problems to work on. It’s at that level.
