Specialized Theological Studies

1. You’re asked to compare how two theologians from different centuries interpret the same biblical passage. How do you feel?

Excited – tracing how interpretations developed is exactly what interests me. I’d do it, but it sounds demanding. I’d avoid such detailed work.

2. How do you feel about reading sources in their original languages, such as biblical Greek, Hebrew or Latin?

I’d like to – it brings me closer to the texts and their nuances. Translations are enough for me. Definitely not.

3. A friend asks you how faith and modern science can be reconciled. How do you respond?

I listen carefully, outline different theological positions and suggest serious literature. I give a short personal opinion. I change the subject.

4. In a seminar, someone presents a view of your tradition that you strongly disagree with. What do you do?

I respond with arguments and sources, and try to understand their reasoning. I stay quiet but feel annoyed. I leave the discussion.

5. Which task would you choose?

Writing a research paper on an ethical question, such as end-of-life care, in the light of theological tradition. Summarising a chapter from a textbook. Neither of them.

6. The programme is taught in English, with students from different countries and church traditions. How do you feel about that?

Wonderful – theology is a global conversation, and English opens up international literature and conferences. I can read academic texts in English, but discussing them aloud would be a challenge. I’d rather study in my own language, with people from my own country.

7. How do you feel about long hours in a library with commentaries, church documents and academic journals?

That’s my natural habitat – I enjoy deep, focused study. In small doses. It sounds exhausting.

8. A community organisation asks you to run a series of talks for adults on a difficult moral topic. How do you react?

Gladly – I’d turn academic knowledge into clear, engaging language. Maybe, if someone helped me prepare. I’d refuse.

9. Which future path appeals to you most?

Doctoral research, teaching theology or leading formation programmes. Something connected with religion – I’m not sure what. Something unrelated to theology.

10. What motivates you most to pursue a Master’s degree in Specialized Theological Studies?

The wish to deepen my understanding of faith and tradition through rigorous research and to share it with others. Gaining an additional qualification. I’m not sure it’s for me
