1. At an exhibition you come across an installation that responds to visitors’ movements with sound and light. What do you do?

Work out how it functions, read up on the artist and think about what it says about our relationship with technology. Take a few photos and move on – it’s a cool effect. Walk past – I prefer classic paintings in frames.

2. During your undergraduate studies or at work, have you helped create a project that blends art and technology – video, sound, code, interaction?

Yes, and I’d love to develop it into a more serious artistic or research project. Once, for coursework, without getting too involved. No, I was doing something completely different.

3. Seminars, theory readings and project presentations will be in English, and you’ll be studying in an international environment alongside artists, curators and researchers from different countries. How does that sound?

Brilliant – different cultural perspectives fuel my own projects and discussions. Fine, though writing academic texts about art in English will be a challenge. I’d rather study in my first language, with people I already know.

4. You’re given a dense, demanding theoretical text on digital culture. How do you approach it?

Read it carefully, take notes and look for artworks I can relate its arguments to. Skim it and wait for it to be discussed in class. Skip it – theory doesn’t do much for me.

5. A museum wants to show a work from years ago that only runs on long-obsolete hardware. What interests you about it?

How to preserve and present the work without losing its original meaning – a fascinating challenge. I’m curious about the end result, but I’d leave the technical side to specialists. Not much – old technology doesn’t interest me.

6. You have to plan a small media art exhibition. Where do you start?

With a curatorial idea that ties the works together – then I think about the space, the audience and the tech. By picking the works I like best. I’d rather someone else planned it.

7. How do you keep up with what’s happening where art, technology and society meet?

I regularly go to festivals and exhibitions and read about new developments – with a critical eye, too. I sometimes stumble across something interesting on social media. I don’t really follow it.

8. Someone says art made with algorithms is just a flashy gimmick. How do you respond?

Join the conversation – ask what they mean by art and point to works that might change their mind. Partly agree, but stay out of the debate. I don’t have an opinion on it.

9. Where do you see yourself after graduating?

At a cultural institution, working on festivals and exhibitions, in research or in my own artistic practice. In any media-related job. Far away from art and culture.

10. What motivates you most to pursue a Master’s degree in Media arts cultures?

Wanting a deeper understanding of media art – and to create, curate or research it in an international setting. An interest in new media and wanting a Master’s degree. I’m not sure it’s for me
