Why study it:

Tourism Management and Marketing at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin (UMCS) is a two-year, full-time Master's programme with a general academic profile, taught in English at the Faculty of Earth Sciences and Spatial Management. It is designed for those who want to manage tourism businesses, products and destinations and understand what 21st-century travellers expect.

Programme: from market segments to reservation systems

The programme combines economic, social and geographical knowledge. You study, among other things:

  • tourism market segments and their marketing strategies, with an emphasis on digital e-marketing tools
  • sustainable tourism development and the principles of universal design
  • safety issues in tourism
  • modern technologies – AI, social media and GIS – including AI for data processing, analytical reports and data visualisation
  • how international reservation systems work
  • human resource management and the practical skills needed to run your own tourism business

Specialisation: an individual learning path

You can follow an individualised learning path and use a range of information sources, including industry databases, while industry professionals and international faculty take part in teaching.

Placements: practice-oriented, with optional paid internships

Because tourism is a real and significant sector of the economy, the programme includes a relatively large number of practical elements. Outside the programme you can take paid international internships and join certified training courses that develop professional and personal skills. Student conferences, workshops, scientific associations and the Student Government give you further room to grow.

Exchanges: Erasmus+ and an international network

Through Erasmus+ you can study abroad, and classes taught by foreign academic staff help you build an international network already at UMCS.

After graduation: managers, analysts and entrepreneurs

Graduates are prepared to manage tourism activities at local, regional and global levels – in private companies organising tourism, in the management of tourism products and destinations, or in public institutions that promote tourism nationally and internationally. Typical roles include manager, tourism market analyst, marketing specialist and project manager.

Other paths lead to travel agencies, hotels, event and cultural agencies and sports centres, to work as a tour guide or travel coordinator, or to starting your own tourism business.

Tourism
Tourism is travel for pleasure or business; also the theory and practice of touring, the business of attracting, accommodating, and entertaining tourists, and the business of operating tours. Tourism may be international, or within the traveller's country. The World Tourism Organization defines tourism more generally, in terms which go "beyond the common perception of tourism as being limited to holiday activity only", as people "traveling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes".
Tourism
The sheep like nature of travel - being on a beach with thousands of other people is not my idea of fun. I also don't like being a tourist because you don't know what's really going on in a country.
Diana Quick in: Caroline Rees Diana Quick's Travelling Life, The Telegraph, 7 September 2013

A company will get nowhere if all of the thinking is left to management.
