Why study it:

IT Cyber Security at the Faculty of Political Science and Journalism of Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin (UMCS) is a full-time, second-cycle (Master's) programme with a general academic profile, taught in English. It is designed for graduates who want to combine computer science with political science and administration – and understand cybersecurity both as a technical and a public issue.

Programme: security in cyberspace from two angles

On the political science and administration side, you look at the place of cybersecurity in today's understanding of security, the complexity of threats in cyberspace and the many areas of action needed to keep it secure – approached from political, legal, economic and sociological perspectives.

On the computer science side, the programme covers how operating systems work and where they are weak, programming structures and scripting, web applications and their typical vulnerabilities, computer networks and protocol weaknesses across all layers of the OSI model, secure web programming, cryptographic modules in IT systems, penetration testing and information security management standards.

Labs: Linux, Python, OWASP and pentesting

Hands-on skills you develop include:

  • working efficiently in the Linux operating system
  • designing simple algorithms and implementing them in Python
  • testing web application security based on the OWASP standard, finding security bugs and fixing them
  • analysing network weaknesses and applying protection mechanisms against attacks
  • selecting cryptographic methods and modules, carrying out all stages of penetration testing
  • documenting IT system processes and conducting risk analysis

Languages: taught entirely in English

All classes are held in English, and the programme is open to both Polish and international candidates who can document their English skills – with a certificate, prior education in English or an interview.

As of the 2026/27 admissions, based on the programme pages at irk.umcs.pl.

10 questions · two minutes

1. You’re asked to design the security architecture for a new cloud-based system. Where do you start?

2. How do you feel about the mathematics behind cryptography – number theory, key exchange, post-quantum algorithms?

3. Ransomware hits a company at night and you lead the incident response team. How do you act?

4. How do you feel about security governance – risk assessments, policies and compliance with international standards?

5. During research you discover an unknown vulnerability in widely used software. What do you do?

6. The programme is taught in English, and you’ll work on security projects and exercises with students from many countries. How do you feel about that?

7. How do you feel about reverse engineering malware in an isolated lab to understand how it works?

8. Developers want to release an app quickly, but your review finds serious vulnerabilities. How do you handle it?

9. Which future role sounds most like you?

10. What motivates you most to pursue a Master’s degree in IT Cyber Security?

⇑Definitions and quotes

Security
Security is freedom from, or resilience against, potential harm (or other unwanted coercive change) from external forces. Beneficiaries (technically referents) of security may be persons and social groups, objects and institutions, ecosystems, and any other entity or phenomenon vulnerable to unwanted change by its environment.
Security
To bargain freedom for security is the devil's bargain. Having made the bargain, one enjoys neither freedom nor security.
Gerry Spence, Give Me Liberty! Freeing Ourselves in the Twenty-First Century, Ch. 16 : Security, the One-Way Ticket to Slavery, p. 174 (1998)
Security
From that point, my universe went on crumbling; new cracks appeared all the time. I could see that the pleasant securities of childhood, all of those warm little human emotions, all of those trivial aims and purposes that we allow to rule our lives, were an illusion. We were like sheep munching grass, unaware that the butcher's lorry is already on its way. I got used to living with a deep, underlying feeling of uncertainty that no one around me seemed to share. It was rather like living on death row.
Colin Wilson in Alien Dawn, pp. 12-13 (1998)
Security
This option the consumer retains of being able to buy security wherever he pleases brings about a constant emulation among all the producers, each producer striving to maintain or augment his clientele with the attraction of cheapness or of faster, more complete and better justice. If, on the contrary, the consumer is not free to buy security wherever he pleases, you forthwith see open up a large profession dedicated to arbitrariness and bad management.  Justice becomes slow and costly, the police vexatious, individual liberty is no longer respected, the price of security is abusively inflated and inequitably apportioned, according to the power and influence of this or that class of consumers.  The protectors engage in bitter struggles to wrest customers from one another.  In a word, all the abuses inherent in monopoly or in communism crop up.
Gustave de Molinari, tr. J. Huston McCulloch, §X of The Production of Security (Auburn, AL: Ludwig von Mises Institute, 2009; orig. 1849), pp. 57–59.
