Why study it:

Business Analytics and Data Science at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin (UMCS) is a three-year, full-time Bachelor's programme with a general academic profile, run by the Faculty of Economics and taught in English. It combines information technology with business knowledge and is aimed mainly at international students who want to use statistics, data mining and modelling to support management decisions.

Programme: from data to business decisions

The curriculum mixes lectures and seminars, run by academics and business practitioners, with hands-on work:

  • analytical workshops with professional analytical tools, statistical and econometric software, and the use of artificial intelligence in business analytics
  • interactive business simulations in which you take the role of an entrepreneur and see the results of your decisions
  • an Analytical Project and group projects that build teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills
  • Soft Skills and Communication Training to prepare for the everyday work of an analyst
  • business intelligence for key company processes – strategic planning, data processing and operational management

⇑Definitions and quotes

Analytics
Analytics is the discovery, interpretation, and communication of meaningful patterns in data. Especially valuable in areas rich with recorded information, analytics relies on the simultaneous application of statistics, computer programming and operations research to quantify performance.
Business
Business is the activity of making one's living or making money by producing or buying and selling goods or services. Simply put, it is "any activity or enterprise entered into for profit. It does not mean it is a company, a corporation, partnership, or have any such formal organization, but it can range from a street peddler to General Motors." The term is also often used colloquially (but not by lawyers or public officials) to refer to a company, but this article will not deal with that sense of the word.
Business Analytics
Business analytics (BA) refers to the skills, technologies, practices for continuous iterative exploration and investigation of past business performance to gain insight and drive business planning. Business analytics focuses on developing new insights and understanding of business performance based on data and statistical methods. In contrast, business intelligence traditionally focuses on using a consistent set of metrics to both measure past performance and guide business planning, which is also based on data and statistical methods.
Data
Data ( DAY-tə, DAT-ə, DAH-tə) is a set of values of qualitative or quantitative variables.
Data Science
Data science is an interdisciplinary field of scientific methods, processes, algorithms and systems to extract knowledge or insights from data in various forms, either structured or unstructured, similar to data mining.

Business
However successful a man may be in his own business, if he turns from that and engages ill a business which he don't understand, he is like Samson when shorn of his locks his strength has departed, and he becomes like other men.
P. T. Barnum, 'Beware of Outside Operations', The Art of Money Getting (1880).
Business
What I must understand is why someone will continue to get out of bed in the morning once they have all the money they could want. Do they love the business, or do they love the money?
Warren Buffett, 'The Warren Buffett You Don't Know', Business Week article, 5 July 1999.
Business
I think any man in business would be foolish to fool around with his secretary. If it's somebody else's secretary, fine!
