Biology at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin (UMCS) is a three-year, full-time Bachelor's programme with a general academic profile, taught entirely in English at the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology. It is aimed mainly at international students and works as a premedical bridge for those who want to become physicians but have never taken introductory courses in the natural sciences.
Alongside the core biological disciplines, the curriculum covers:
The programme runs as the Medical Biology specialisation, which prepares you for entry into professional programmes in medicine and helps you meet the requirements of MD programmes – you learn to apply biological achievements in modern medicine and practise the principles of premedical first aid in theory and in practice.
Teaching combines lectures and exercises with laboratory classes, field classes and experimental scientific practical training. Outside the timetable you can join student scientific clubs – among them clubs of biologists, microbiologists, biochemists, biotechnologists, neurobiologists and phytochemists – take part in research projects and help run science events such as the Lublin Science Festival or the Night of Biologists. Note that the study programme itself does not include an internship.
Through Erasmus+ and other exchange programmes you can spend one semester at a university abroad, for example in Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Slovenia or Turkey, while at home you study in a multinational group of students from all over the world.
The programme follows European teaching standards, so after graduating you can go on to medical studies or continue at Master's level at UMCS, elsewhere in Poland or in other European Union countries.
The broad biological foundation also opens the way to work in medical, diagnostic and analytical laboratories, research institutions, sanitary-epidemiological stations and science-based industries, as well as to careers in biotechnology, research and development, and teaching.
