1. You notice that water rolls off a lotus leaf without wetting it. What do you think?

I wonder how its surface structure works and whether we could copy it to make self-cleaning materials. It’s a nice effect, but I don’t think about why it happens. Nothing much – it’s just a leaf.

2. How do you get on with chemistry, biology and physics at school?

I enjoy them – especially where they overlap, such as how living things are built. I like one of them, but not all three. I struggle with science and avoid it.

3. Your class project is to make packaging from something other than conventional plastic. What do you do?

Experiment with materials like starch, mushroom mycelium or plant fibres and test which one works best. Use cardboard – it’s the simplest option. Do the minimum – packaging doesn’t interest me.

4. Would you enjoy spending hours in a lab, preparing samples, measuring their strength and recording results?

Yes – careful experiments and seeing the data come together sound satisfying. For a while, but not every day. No – lab work sounds tedious.

5. Classes and lab reports will be in English, in a group of students from different countries. How does that sound?

Great – science is international, and I’d enjoy working on projects with people from different backgrounds. I’ll manage, though the scientific vocabulary may take time. I’d rather study in my own language.

6. You read that spider silk is stronger than steel for its weight. How do you react?

I want to know what makes it so strong and how scientists try to produce it artificially. Impressive – but I move on. I’m not interested in spiders or materials.

7. A product is labelled biodegradable. What do you want to know?

What it’s made of, under what conditions it breaks down and how long that really takes. Whether it costs more. Nothing – a label is a label.

8. How do you feel about using a microscope to study structures finer than a human hair?

Fascinated – the hidden structure of a material is where things get interesting. It’s fine now and then. Bored – I prefer things I can see with my own eyes.

9. How important is it to you that your future work helps reduce waste and pollution?

Very – I want to develop materials that perform well and are sustainable. It would be nice, but it isn’t a priority. It doesn’t matter to me.

10. What motivates you most to study Advanced Biobased and Bioinspired Materials?

The chance to design new materials inspired by nature that could replace plastics and other harmful products. An interest in science and environmental issues. I’m not sure it’s for me
