10 questions · two minutes

1. A client needs a new piece of equipment but describes it only in very general terms. Where do you start?

2. You’re designing a part that will be mass-produced. What do you take into account?

3. Classes, design reviews and documentation will all be in English, and you’ll develop projects with people from different countries. How does that sound?

4. You have several concepts for solving the same problem. How do you choose the best one?

5. Your prototype works, but users complain it’s awkward to operate. What do you do?

6. How well do you know 3D CAD and drawing software?

7. A teammate spots a mistake in your design just before it goes to production. How do you react?

8. Are you interested in designing for a product’s whole life cycle – repair, disassembly and recycling?

9. Where do you see yourself after your Master’s?

10. What motivates you most to pursue a Master’s degree in Mechanics and Machine Design?

⇑Definitions and quotes

Design
Design is the creation of a plan or convention for the construction of an object, system or measurable human interaction (as in architectural blueprints, engineering drawings, business processes, circuit diagrams, and sewing patterns). Design has different connotations in different fields (see design disciplines below). In some cases, the direct construction of an object (as in pottery, engineering, management, coding, and graphic design) is also considered to use design thinking.
Machine
A machine uses power to apply forces and control movement to perform an intended action. Machines can be driven by animals and people, by natural forces such as wind and water, and by chemical, thermal, or electrical power, and include a system of mechanisms that shape the actuator input to achieve a specific application of output forces and movement. They can also include computers and sensors that monitor performance and plan movement, often called mechanical systems.
Mechanics
Mechanics (Greek μηχανική) is that area of science concerned with the behaviour of physical bodies when subjected to forces or displacements, and the subsequent effects of the bodies on their environment. The scientific discipline has its origins in Ancient Greece with the writings of Aristotle and Archimedes (see History of classical mechanics and Timeline of classical mechanics). During the early modern period, scientists such as Galileo, Kepler, and Newton laid the foundation for what is now known as classical mechanics. It is a branch of classical physics that deals with particles that are either at rest or are moving with velocities significantly less than the speed of light. It can also be defined as a branch of science which deals with the motion of and forces on objects.
Mechanics
No force however great can stretch a cord however fine into an horizontal line which is accurately straight.
William Whewell Elementary Treatise on Mechanics, The Equilibrium of Forces on a Point (1819).
Machine
The machine is no longer the paragon of progress and the final expression of our desires: it is merely a series of instruments, which we will use in so far as they are serviceable to life at large, and which we will curtail where they infringe upon it or exist purely to support the adventitious structure of capitalism.
Lewis Mumford, Technics and Civilization (1934) Ch. 8 "Orientation," p.365
Design
Good design looks right. It is simple (clear and uncomplicated). Good design is also elegant, and does not look contrived. A map should be aesthetically pleasing, thought provoking, and communicative
Arthur H. Robinson (1953) Elements of Cartography p. 318
