Why study it:

Computer Physics at AGH University of Krakow is a first-cycle engineering programme that combines physics, mathematics and computer science. It is meant for students who want to solve scientific and engineering problems with programming, data analysis, numerical methods and computer simulations.

Programme: physics backed by scientific computing

The programme covers, among other things:

  • mathematical methods used in science and engineering, especially in scientific computing and data handling
  • general, applied and modern physics and technology
  • algorithms, numerical methods, programming techniques and IT tools for computer physics
  • breaking down technical or physical problems to propose cost- and time-efficient solutions
  • the role of science and engineering in society, including ethical and legal aspects

Placements: four weeks after the third year

Placement at a glance

  • Whensummer holidays after the third year of studies
  • How longfour weeks, five days a week, 8 hours a day – 160 hours, 6 ECTS
  • Wherea place you choose yourself, under a placement agreement signed by the Faculty and the employer

Languages: communicating science at B2 level

You learn to share results with the scientific community clearly and concisely, in your native language or a foreign language at B2 level, and to lead an interdisciplinary project on your own or in a team.

After graduation: IT, simulations, finance or a master's degree

Graduates have the skills to work as computer programmers and can find jobs on the IT market, in companies dealing with simulations of industrial systems, in research and development institutes, and in banks and insurance companies that use computer modelling.

Taking part in physics research additionally requires second-cycle studies – for example Technical Physics (Fizyka Techniczna) at the Faculty of Physics and Computer Science. You can also continue in computer science, e.g. Applied Computer Science (Informatyka Stosowana) or Data Science at the Faculty of Computer Science, Electronics and Telecommunications.

10 questions · two minutes

1. In physics you’re studying how a pendulum swings, and your teacher mentions you could simulate it on a computer. What do you think?

2. How do you get on with maths, especially functions and equations?

3. Have you ever done any coding – at school, on a course or just for fun?

4. Lectures, software documentation and research papers will all be in English, and you’ll work on projects in an international group. How does that sound?

5. Your program simulating a thrown ball gives a result that’s way off your calculations on paper. What do you do?

6. What draws you most to popular science documentaries?

7. You’re given a file with hundreds of measurements from an experiment. What do you do?

8. How do you react when a physics problem doesn’t work out straight away?

9. What do you picture yourself doing in the future?

10. What motivates you most to study Computer Physics?

⇑Definitions and quotes

Computer
A computer is a device that can be instructed to carry out sequences of arithmetic or logical operations automatically via computer programming. Modern computers have the ability to follow generalized sets of operations, called programs. These programs enable computers to perform an extremely wide range of tasks.
Physics
Physics (from Ancient Greek: φυσική (ἐπιστήμη), translit. physikḗ (epistḗmē), lit. 'knowledge of nature', from φύσις phýsis "nature") is the natural science that studies matter and its motion and behavior through space and time and that studies the related entities of energy and force. Physics is one of the most fundamental scientific disciplines, and its main goal is to understand how the universe behaves.
Physics
I was an atheist, finding no reason to postulate the existence of any truths outside of mathematics, physics and chemistry. But then I went to medical school, and encountered life and death issues at the bedsides of my patients. Challenged by one of those patients, who asked "What do you believe, doctor?", I began searching for answers.
Francis Collins, a geneticist who led the U.S. government’s effort to decipher the human genome (DNA). cnn.com
Physics
The "paradox" is only a conflict between reality and your feeling of what reality "ought to be."
Richard Feynman, The Feynman Lectures on Physics (1964) Volume III, p. 18-9
Physics
Physics is to be regarded not so much as the study of something a priori given, but rather as the development of methods of ordering and surveying human experience. In this respect our task must be to account for such experience in a manner independent of individual subjective judgement and therefor objective in the sense that it can be unambiguously communicated in ordinary human language.
