1. You look back at the work you made during your Bachelor’s. What do you see?

Clear threads and questions that I want to keep developing and deepening in my practice. Lots of different experiments that don’t yet add up to a coherent whole. Mostly assignments I had to get through.

2. You need to write an artist statement – a short text about your work. How do you approach it?

Think about the themes, materials and questions that connect my work, and try to put them into precise words. Keep it vague – I’d rather the work spoke for itself. Put it off – writing about art makes no sense to me.

3. You get the chance to put on an exhibition in a small gallery. Where do you start?

With the concept, the selection of work, the space and how visitors will move through it. Pick my best pieces and hang them wherever there’s room. Turn it down – it’s too much organising.

4. Seminars, critiques, theory readings and presentations of your own work will be in English, in a group of artists from many countries. How do you feel about that?

Great – it prepares me for residencies and exhibitions abroad, and talking to artists from other cultures broadens my perspective. I’ll cope, though talking about art in a foreign language takes effort. I’d rather present my work only in my own language.

5. How do you approach art theory and critical writing?

I read it because it helps me place my own practice in a wider context. I turn to it when I have to, for an assignment. I don’t think artists need theory.

6. For weeks, nothing has been going right in the studio. What do you do?

Switch medium, go back to my sketchbook, visit exhibitions and talk to other artists. Wait for inspiration to come back. Start thinking about giving up art.

7. Someone suggests a joint project with a scientist, musician or architect. How do you react?

Enthusiastically – encounters like that often lead to the most interesting work. I’m curious, but I’d rather work alone. I say no – I don’t want to step outside my field.

8. How do you look after your professional development as an artist?

I document my work, keep my portfolio up to date and apply for competitions, open calls and residencies. I sometimes post my work on social media. I don’t think about it – only the making matters.

9. What kind of final degree project would you like to create?

A coherent, mature body of work or an installation that reflects my own interests and explorations. Something eye-catching that will go down well at the final review. Whatever lets me finish the degree.

10. What motivates you most to pursue a Master’s degree in Fine Arts MA?

The chance to deepen my artistic practice and prepare for an independent career in the art world. More time to make work and access to a studio. I’m not sure it’s for me
