1. How often do you draw, paint or make art in your free time?

Regularly – I keep a sketchbook and I’m always trying out new techniques. Now and then, when I’m in the mood. Hardly ever.

2. In art class, you’re given the theme ‘my home’. What do you do?

Look for my own unexpected angle – a collage, a map of memories or a series of sketches. Draw my house the way it looks. Do anything, just to hand something in.

3. You’re in a contemporary art gallery. How do you spend your time?

I stop at the pieces that move me, read the labels and think about what the artist was trying to say. I walk through quickly and take a few photos. I get bored and wait to leave.

4. Classes, critiques and discussions about art will be in English, and you’ll share the studio with people from many countries. How does that sound?

Great – art is international, and other cultures and perspectives could really inspire me. I’ll manage, though talking about my own work in English will be a challenge. I’d rather study in my own language.

5. A teacher or friend criticises your drawing. How do you react?

Ask what exactly isn’t working and use the feedback to push my work further. Listen, but feel a bit hurt and change very little. Stop showing my work to anyone.

6. How do you feel about new materials and techniques – clay, printmaking or oil paint, say?

I love experimenting, even if my first attempts don’t turn out well. I’ll give it a go, but I’d rather stick to what I know. I don’t like getting my hands dirty or trying new things.

7. Can you work on a single project for hours, or even days?

Yes – I keep coming back to a piece and refining it until I’m happy with it. Yes, if the subject really grabs me. I get bored quickly and leave things unfinished.

8. You’re waiting for a bus. What do you do?

Watch the people, the light and the colours – sometimes I do a quick sketch or make a note. Scroll through my phone. Nothing in particular – I just wait.

9. How do you picture your future?

Developing my own practice, exhibiting my work and perhaps teaching art or working at a cultural institution. I’d like to do something creative, but I’m not sure what yet. I’d prefer a steady job far removed from art.

10. What motivates you most to study Fine Arts BA?

The chance to develop my own artistic voice under the guidance of experienced artists. A love of drawing and painting. I’m not sure it’s for me
