1. A client comes to you with red, itchy skin after a treatment she had done elsewhere. What do you do?

I take a thorough history, assess her skin and, if I suspect a medical problem, refer her to a dermatologist. I suggest a soothing treatment. I send her back to whoever did the treatment.

2. How do you approach treating clients with skin conditions such as acne or psoriasis?

I want to know how to adapt treatments to the condition and how to work with the client’s doctor. I’ll treat them if their doctor approves, but I don’t look into it further. I’d rather only treat people with healthy skin.

3. You’re reading the ingredients list of a new product. What do you do?

I look at the active ingredients, concentrations and contraindications, then check for studies that back up its effects. I glance at the main ingredients and what other people say. I trust the manufacturer’s description.

4. In a class taught in English, your international group discusses a patient case and you have to present a treatment plan. How do you feel?

Confident – I know the professional vocabulary in English, read research papers and enjoy discussing cases with people from different countries. I can cope, though my terminology still needs work. I’d rather someone else presented it.

5. How would you describe your hands-on experience after your undergraduate degree?

I’ve worked in a treatment room and want to build my skills in managing skin problems alongside doctors. I have the basics from classes, but not much experience with clients. Hands-on practice isn’t my main priority.

6. A client insists on a treatment you think is risky for them. What do you do?

I explain the risks, suggest a safer alternative and say no if I have to. I go ahead, but take extra care. I do what the client wants.

7. Are you interested in device-based treatments, such as laser or radiofrequency?

Yes – I want to understand the physics, indications and contraindications, not just how to operate the device. Yes, but mostly the practical side. No, I prefer manual treatments.

8. How do you keep your knowledge up to date?

I regularly read research papers and go to conferences and training courses. I follow industry news on social media. What I learnt during my degree is enough.

9. A patient who has finished cancer treatment asks how to care for her skin safely. How do you respond?

I ask about the treatment she’s had, consult her doctor and recommend gentle, safe skincare. I recommend some gentle products. I tell her it’s not my area.

10. What motivates you most to pursue a Master’s degree in Clinical Cosmetology?

I want to work where cosmetology meets medicine – in a treatment clinic, an aesthetic dermatology practice or in product research. An interest in advanced skincare treatments. I’m not sure it’s for me
