⇑Why study Management and Leadership (Master's) at SWPS University?

Dlaczego warto studiować na Uniwersytecie SWPS
Why study it:

Management and Leadership is a full-time master's programme lasting four semesters at SWPS University, with classes on weekday afternoons and evenings. It helps you find your own path as a leader by blending practical business skills with psychological insight into how teams and organisations work.

Programme: psychology at the heart of management

The programme starts from the view that emotions and irrational factors shape decision making and consumer behaviour, so psychology is part of effective leadership. You learn to combine rational thinking with mature intuition, to manage your own feelings and those of others, and to run socially responsible organisations built on lasting relationships with customers. Digital transformation, innovation and the management of remote, interdisciplinary teams complete the picture.

Teaching is active: workshops, interactive seminars, case studies, group projects, debates and simulations. In strategic management, for instance, you analyse the strategy of a chosen company, assess its strengths and weaknesses and propose changes. Throughout the studies runs the Leader's Path, which begins with an assessment of your competences and self-management, moves on to building relationships and developing others, and then to team psychology and coping with organisational change. Individual tutoring is available, though entirely optional.

Specialisation: two tracks in the second year

Choose your track

  • Managerfor future managers of medium and large organisations; covers big data analytics, quality management, mergers, acquisitions and partnerships, and internal control and audit
  • Entrepreneurfor those who want to start or run their own business; covers legal aspects of running a business, investing, product management and tax optimisation

Placements: projects for business partners

You build a portfolio of group projects commissioned by business and organisational partners, guided by business and academic mentors:

  • Community Project (semester 1): diagnose a social problem, propose solutions and observe how the affected community responds
  • Product or Process Innovation Project (semester 2): identify an organisation's needs, formulate a value proposition, develop a business model and pitch it to the client
  • Consulting Project (semester 3): assess a real business situation and propose solutions in areas such as market strategy, process optimisation, talent management and digital transformation
  • Master's thesis: you still develop and defend one to graduate

After graduation: a career plan of your own

Towards the end of the two years, the leadership and management skills you have gained are assessed and a career plan is developed together with you. Which direction it takes depends on your track: the Manager track points towards medium and large organisations, the Entrepreneur track towards your own business.

⇑Definitions and quotes

Leadership
Leadership is both a research area and a practical skill encompassing the ability of an individual or organization to "lead" or guide other individuals, teams, or entire organizations. Specialist literature debates various viewpoints, contrasting Eastern and Western approaches to leadership, and also (within the West) United States versus European approaches. U.S. academic environments define leadership as "a process of social influence in which a person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task". Leadership seen from a European and non-academic perspective encompasses a view of a leader who can be moved not only by communitarian goals but also by the search for personal power.
Management
Management (or managing) is the administration of an organization, whether it is a business, a not-for-profit organization, or government body. Management includes the activities of setting the strategy of an organization and coordinating the efforts of its employees (or of volunteers) to accomplish its objectives through the application of available resources, such as financial, natural, technological, and human resources. The term "management" may also refer to those people who manage an organization.
Leadership
With the changes in technological complexity, especially in information technology, the leadership task has changed. Leadership in a networked organization is a fundamentally different thing from leadership in a traditional hierarchy.
Edgar H. Schein (2011), Organizational Culture and Leadership, p. 12-13
Management
Management is defined here as the accomplishment of desired objectives by establishing an environment favorable to performance by people operating in organized groups. Each of the managerial functions (planning, organizing, staffing, , directing, and controlling) is analyzed and described in a systematic way. As this is done, both the distilled experience of practicing managers and the findings of scholars are presented. This is approached in such a way that the reader may grasp the relationships between each of the functions, obtain a clear view of the major principles underlying them.
Harold Koontz and Cyril O'Donnell. Principles of Management; An Analysis of Managerial Functions. 1968, p. 1
Management
In the long-run the workman may be as necessary to his master as his master is to him, but the necessity is not so immediate.
Adam Smith (1776) The Wealth of Nations Chapter VIII, p. 80
