⇑Why study Management and Leadership at SWPS University?

Dlaczego warto studiować na Uniwersytecie SWPS
Why study it:

Management and Leadership is a three-year, full-time bachelor's programme taught in English at SWPS University. It suits people who want to lead teams and organisations by combining business tools with insight from psychology, sociology and economics.

Programme: four pillars of modern management

The programme rests on four pillars. Management provides the methods and techniques needed to run organisations, psychology explains how individuals and teams work and how to build environments that support collaboration, sociology adds research methods for evidence-based decisions, and economics helps you follow global trends and analyse risk.

Learning is experiential: you take part in workshops and business simulations and work on real projects with business partners. Along the way you build skills in management methods and tools, self-management and leadership, communication and negotiation, setting up and funding a business, designing social innovations and analysing business data. The first year covers how organisations work and how to use data in decisions, the second moves on to sales, customer relations, change management, finance and innovation, and the final semester focuses on sustainable development, people management and team psychology.

Specialisation: two specialisations after the first year

After the first year you choose one of two specialisations. Start-ups is for those who dream of launching their own venture: you learn to develop and verify business ideas, win clients, identify funding sources and shape a business strategy. Project Management is for future project managers: you work with both traditional and agile methodologies, planning and monitoring tools, and learn to communicate with teammates and stakeholders.

Placements: internships built into the curriculum

Business internships start in the first year and are part of the curriculum, alongside a community project, an organisation development project and an organisation improvement project run for business partners. In the third year you compile a professional graduation portfolio instead of a customary bachelor's thesis.

After graduation: roles open to graduates

The programme prepares you for roles such as:

  • Project Manager, coordinating projects and teams with agile and Scrum methods
  • Start-up Founder, developing a product or service and a growth strategy
  • Business Development Manager, spotting growth opportunities and new markets
  • Product Owner, guiding product development towards user needs and business goals
  • Business Analyst, analysing trends and formulating recommendations
  • Agile Coach, helping organisations adopt agile practices

⇑Definitions and quotes

Leadership
Leadership is both a research area and a practical skill encompassing the ability of an individual or organization to "lead" or guide other individuals, teams, or entire organizations. Specialist literature debates various viewpoints, contrasting Eastern and Western approaches to leadership, and also (within the West) United States versus European approaches. U.S. academic environments define leadership as "a process of social influence in which a person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task". Leadership seen from a European and non-academic perspective encompasses a view of a leader who can be moved not only by communitarian goals but also by the search for personal power.
Management
Management (or managing) is the administration of an organization, whether it is a business, a not-for-profit organization, or government body. Management includes the activities of setting the strategy of an organization and coordinating the efforts of its employees (or of volunteers) to accomplish its objectives through the application of available resources, such as financial, natural, technological, and human resources. The term "management" may also refer to those people who manage an organization.
Leadership
You cannot be a leader, and ask other people to follow you, unless you know how to follow, too.
Sam Rayburn, The Leadership of Speaker Sam Rayburn, Collected Tributes of His Congressional Colleagues (1961), p. 34. House Doc. 87–247. "A compilation of tributes paid him in the Hall of the House of Representatives, June 12, 1961, and other pertinent material, to celebrate the occasion of his having served as Speaker twice as long as any of his predecessors in the history of the United States: Sixteen years and 273 days" (title page)
Management
Management of many is the same as management of few. It is a matter of organization.
Sun Tzu (c. 6th century BC) The Art of War
Management
You manage things, you lead people. We went overboard on management and forgot about leadership. It might help if we ran the MBAs out of Washington.
Grace Hopper (1987), quoted in "The Wit and Wisdom of Grace Hopper" by Philip Schieber, OCLC Newsletter, No. 167 (March/April 1987)
