Why study it:

The BA in Political Science at the University of Humanities and Economics in Lodz (AHE) is a three-year, full-time first-cycle programme taught in English. It is for students interested in politics, international relations and public policy who want to analyse political, social and economic events and comment on them with a critical eye.

Programme: workshops, debates and research projects

Most classes are seminars, workshops and projects, so you keep testing your skills in practice rather than only listening to lectures. The programme combines the traditional, theoretical approach to political science with current changes in the world – political systems, international relations and policy-making processes. You carry out research projects, take part in parliamentary debates and meet politicians, public officials and representatives of non-governmental organisations.

Specialisation: trade and business or e-politics and PR

In the English-taught programme you choose one of two specialisations. International Trade and Business on the European Market covers international trade policies and agreements, regional integration, cross-border business operations and the economic dynamics of the European market, and develops analytical and negotiation skills.

e-Politics and Public Relations in the Public Sphere looks at digital democracy, social media in political campaigns and the way public relations shapes public opinion and policy-making.

Languages: studying in English

All classes are taught in English, and foreign language teaching is a priority on the course, so that graduates can work comfortably within the structures of EU countries.

After graduation: administration, politics and international organisations

Graduates are prepared to work in local and central government, political parties, business and social organisations, as well as in international institutions and organisations. Other options include representations of European institutions, European information points, the media, advocacy groups, non-governmental organisations and companies involved in international trade.

⇑Definitions and quotes

Political Science
Political science is a social science which deals with systems of governance, and the analysis of political activities, political thoughts and political behavior. It deals extensively with the theory and practice of politics which is commonly thought of as determining of the distribution of power and resources. Political scientists "see themselves engaged in revealing the relationships underlying political events and conditions, and from these revelations they attempt to construct general principles about the way the world of politics works."
Science
Science (from Latin scientia, meaning "knowledge") is a systematic enterprise that builds and organizes knowledge in the form of testable explanations and predictions about the universe.
Science
We’ve arranged a global civilization in which most critical elements profoundly depend on science and technology. We have also arranged things so that almost no one understands science and technology. This is a prescription for disaster. We might get away with it for a while, but sooner or later this combustible mixture of ignorance and power is going to blow up in our faces.
Sir Ernest Rutherford from The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark (1996), 26.
Science
The men in the laboratory... cannot be said to observe the actual objects of their curiosity at all. ...The sense data on which the propositions of modern science rest are, for the most part, little photographic spots and blurs, or inky curved lines on paper. ... What is directly observable is only a sign of the "physical fact"; it requires interpretation to yield scientific propositions.
Susanne Langer, Philosophy in a New Key (1942)
Science
Within the short span of a human life and with man's limited powers of memory, any stock of knowledge worthy of the name is unattainable except by the greatest mental economy. Science itself, therefore, may be regarded as a minimal problem, consisting of the completest possible presentment of facts with the least possible expenditure of thought.
Ernst Mach, The Science of Mechanics: A Critical and Historical Account of Its Development (1893) p. 490, Tr. Thomas J. McCormack.
