⇑Why study Computer Science at AHE?

Why study it:

Computer Science at the University of Humanities and Economics in Lodz (AHE) is a 3.5-year, full-time first-cycle engineering programme taught in English. It is for students who want solid foundations in programming, networks and artificial intelligence and plan an international career in IT.

Programme: from the first commit to AI

You start with programming fundamentals and use a version control system from the very first semester, then move on to unit testing, web technologies, system analysis, databases, computer networks and cybersecurity. Python accompanies you through almost all semesters, alongside C/C++, Rust and Java, and you also work with tools such as Git, Docker, CI/CD and Jupyter Notebooks. Classes rely on projects, workshops and case studies based on real problems from the IT profession, and they are taught by academics and practitioners with industry experience.

Specialisation: three English-taught paths

In the English-taught programme you choose one of three specialisations:

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) – a strong mathematical and algorithmic base, then machine learning, deep learning, computer vision and natural language processing, plus AI ethics and intellectual property protection
  • Cybersecurity and Cloud Infrastructure – computer networks combined with cloud computing: hybrid architectures in AWS and Azure, Infrastructure as Code, Docker containers, virtual firewalls and access control
  • Programming Technologies – web and desktop applications, online databases, web application testing and distributed systems programming

Languages: an international group

The whole programme is taught in English and attracts both Polish and international students interested in working in the global IT sector.

After graduation: software, networks, data and AI

Graduates work in software and hardware companies, in teams that design and administer networks or databases, in analyst and developer teams, in companies providing IT services, in research and development institutions and in technology start-ups. Those who choose AI are prepared for junior roles such as machine learning engineer, including work on large language models used in chatbots and text generation systems.

After the engineering degree you can continue at master's level – AHE runs a second-cycle Computer Science programme, with the Data Processing Technologies specialisation also available in English.

As of the 2026/27 admissions, based on the programme pages at ahe.lodz.pl.

⇑Definitions and quotes

Computer
A computer is a device that can be instructed to carry out sequences of arithmetic or logical operations automatically via computer programming. Modern computers have the ability to follow generalized sets of operations, called programs. These programs enable computers to perform an extremely wide range of tasks.
Computer Science
Computer science is the study of the theory, experimentation, and engineering that form the basis for the design and use of computers. It is the scientific and practical approach to computation and its applications and the systematic study of the feasibility, structure, expression, and mechanization of the methodical procedures (or algorithms) that underlie the acquisition, representation, processing, storage, communication of, and access to, information. An alternate, more succinct definition of computer science is the study of automating algorithmic processes that scale. A computer scientist specializes in the theory of computation and the design of computational systems. See glossary of computer science.
Science
Science (from Latin scientia, meaning "knowledge") is a systematic enterprise that builds and organizes knowledge in the form of testable explanations and predictions about the universe.
Computer Science
[Computers] are developing so rapidly that even computer scientists cannot keep up with them. It must be bewildering to most mathematicians and engineers... In spite of the diversity of the applications, the methods of attacking the difficult problems with computers show a great unity, and the name of Computer Sciences is being attached to the discipline as it emerges. It must be understood, however, that this is still a young field whose structure is still nebulous. The student will find a great many more problems than answers.
George Forsythe (1961) "Engineering students must learn both computing and mathematics". J. Eng. Educ. 52 (1961), p. 177. as cited in (Knuth, 1972) According to Donald Knuth in this quote Forsythe coined the term "computer science".
Computer Science
Software engineering is the part of computer science which is too difficult for the computer scientist.
Friedrich Bauer, "Software Engineering." Information Processing: Proceedings of the IFIP Congress 1971, Ljubljana, Yugoslavia, August 23-28, 1971.
Science
Those (natural) laws cannot be circumvented by any amount of piety or cleverness, but they can be understood. Uncovering them should be the highest goal of a civilized society. Not, as we have seen, because scientists have any claim to greater intellect or virtue, but because the scientific method transcends the flaws of individual scientists. Science is the only way we have of separating the truth from ideology, or fraud, or mere foolishness.
Robert L. Park, Voodoo Science (2000), p. 211
